Hi,

Windows xp has recently developed the following problem. I have tried uninstalling all recent software, going back to restore points I KNOW where before this started but it continues...

Windows XP Pro loads ok, gets to the desktop and appears to be ok. When you hover the mouse over the start bar, I get an Hourglass. I have to wait about two minutes for it to finish. CTRL-ALT-DELETE does not show anything running, but I do see the Windows SP2 "Your firewall is not turned on" message for a split-second. Later, when I check the firewall settings all is on and working!?

Also, the "My Computer" takes AGES to come up when the pc is in this state.

I have run all the Spy ware software I can find, TweakXP, McAfee A/V but still the problem is there.

Any ideas people?

It does sound like a virus of sorts, just becoz you did not find anything does not mean it aint there! You say you know when it happened were you on the internet when it happened. Man them porn sites are killer. LOL
Down load startup cop to see what exactly is starting with your PC. That MSCONFIG is not worth a f**k.

Try it and post back mate!

OK, startup cop can see the following:

Rundll32.exe
C:\Program Files\Microsoft AntiSpyware\gcasServ.exe
C:\Program Files\Hewlett-Packard\Digital Imaging\bin\hpohmr08.exe
C:\Program Files\Hewlett-Packard\Digital Imaging\bin\hpotdd01.exe
C:\Program Files\Ahead\InCD\InCD.exe
C:\Program Files\Network Associates\Common Framework\UpdaterUI.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\\NeroCheck.exe
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Network Associates\TalkBack\tbmon.exe
C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe
C:\Program Files\Network Associates\VirusScan\SHSTAT.EXE
C:\Program Files\Alcatel\SpeedTouch USB\Dragdiag.exe

Have disabled each in turn, and this makes no difference.
Just noticed Hard Drive light on SATA drive is flashing like buggery when this 'freeze' is happening......

Me thinks it would be easiest, fastest, and the best way to prevent recurring of the problem would be to do a hard format of the disks.

If one thing can breathe new life into an old (or new for that matter) computer is a good format.

Boot into safe mode, run CHKDSK, defrag...see if it helps.

I'm not happy to re-install XP without making an effort as to what is causing the problem. If I re-install it might come back in a week, and I'm no better off than I was.

I have run spinwrite on the disk, which highlited no errors.
I have defragged the disk, and also optimised the bootup procedure using TweakXP.

Is there any way of visually seeing what the Hard Drive is actually doing at any time?

Me.

Go to Start--RUN
Type in MSCONFIG hit return.

Before disabling a bunch of stuff in the startup area look it up in google if you dont know what it is.
Also look in the system.ini and win.ini tab.

Defrag your OS partition twice.

Move your swap file to a partition where there are no other files. Yup give it its own partition doesnt need much. This way your swap file is never fragmented.

Move your Internet Temp folder location to its own little partition. This most commonly fragments peoples OS and Swapfile since 99% of the people out there have it on C.

Do a search and delete any TMP and ~mp files. AKA Temp files. Yes they still exist and windows attempts to recover them.

Good Luck

Even more important did you do a spyware scan also? Very different from Virus Scan.
