Re: Asus A8N-SLI "Premium", WHICH MEMORY IS BEST...
Just got my A8N-SLI-Premium from Newegg the other day and now I am ready to make the decission on MEMORY.

So, price NOT being my major concern,
and knowing that I will be running Either the (AMD FX-57) or the (X2-4800+) (I am flip-flopping right now)

What would be the absolute BEST memory to put in this box as a pure dedicated Game Machine for 2GB and for 4GB total.???

And I do plan on MILD overclocking down the road, but NOT pushing it hard.

While waiting to see what replies I got here, I went over to the ASUS support forums to have a look around.
I was surprised to find several threads ongoing with people have serious problems getting either 4GB or all 4 modules to work properly. Seems this is a bit of a HOT Topic for several MoBo users...

Thought this might be of some interest as well.
There is yet another varient of this Mobo coming forth...

ASUS A8N"32"-SLI Premium Board
http://www.vr-zone.com.sg/?i=2414&s=1

ASUS has an upcoming A8N32-SLI Premium board that has two PCI-E x16 slots running at full x16 bandwidth each. This is made possible by pairing up two nForce4 chipsets; CK8-04 and C51D together to offer up to 40 PCI Express lanes where 32 PCI Express lanes are allocated to the two PCI-E x16 graphics slots, 2 to network and RAID controllers and the remaining 4 to the PCI-E x4 slot.

Another Version of this board,

From what ive read the T1 problem that was at fault when overclocking with the Deluxe version has been fixed with this version of the board. Altho has anyone overclocked with this version of the board past 250FSB without any problems.
.

Asus A8n SLI Deluxe T1 Problem
The Deluxe had an error when overclocking past 250FSB.

The T1 problem the Deluxe board had was it never let you go over 240-250 FSB with the ram set
to T1. This was a big pain as it limited the amount of overclocking was available.

The premium version of the board had this error fixed. The Premium is an updated version
of the deluxe with alot more upgrades and errors fixed.

Did this T1 fix have any impact on the inability to run 4GB in 1T mode??

That has always puzzled me, that we can not run with a full load of memory without having to degrade down to 2T..

Merc Said in another thread:
<Your 4 DIMMs will run at DDR just not at 400 and 1T.>
<The memory controller will use it at 333 and 2T.
<You can try adjusting the settings in BIOS to maximize it.
<This si a known problem with AMD's on-die memory that is supposely addressed in the latest CPU's but I don't think you'll see any improvement until the next socket comes out.
<That socket is supposed to be DDR2 and 4 DIMM dual sided capable and available late this year or early next year.
<As far as running with 4 at slow speeds or two at high it depends on what you are doing.
<If gaming then go for the 2 at high speeds, if video editing then 4 at low speeds.
<Best solution get 2x1024MB DIMMS and run them at DDR 400 1T.>>

Based on your experience in real world gaming with very high end systems, is obtaining the "1T" more desireable than having the 4GB of Ram??

It seems that BF2 really wants 2GB of RAM to run at its optimum, and with dual 7800Ultra 512mb in SLI mode, I am going to have a good chunk LESS than that availalb eot the game if I am only running 2GB total Ram.

But i have NOT been there nor done that, so I am looking for information from those that have...

>> Re: Asus A8N-SLI Premium FAQ
Its a big limitation on the Asus Deluxe, i think the Premium should have this error fixed. With regards to
2GB of ram this had been brought up time and time again. From what i gather 1Gb of decent ram should
be sufficient.

T1 is alot faster then T2 but if you must sacrifice this for 2GB then it will have to be done. I personally
and from what ive read 1GB of fast ram is enough.

So if I understand what your saying, 1T can not be obtained above 1GB total Ram.
Either 2GB OR 4GB will force you into 2T ??

Christopher.

A Quote from Merc.

"AMD 64 CPU's have the memory controller on board and cannot do DDR 400 1T
when all 4 memory slots are filled with dual sided DIMMs. If you want to run at DDR 400 1T
then you'll have to use just A1 and B1 (the 2 blue slots)".

I just finished testing my A8N SLI Premium mobo. Runs great.

I have a newb question. While running my tests, I used the included heatsink and fan on my amd 64 3700+. I bought an xp 90 and panaflo fan, and want to add it.

I've removed the stock heatsink, and a thin layer of thermal paste remained on the cpu. I bought some artic silver 5. I don't know if and how I should clean the top of the cpu. I'm being careful here and want to ask someone before I make a mistake installing the last piece of the system.

Could someone help me out please.

Thanks.
Keith

Ive read that alcohol is best. I used nail cleanner when i cleaned my CPU and Heatsink with
a anti static cloth. As long as there are now hairs or dirt i think it should be fine.

It took me about 5minutes and mine is running wicked.

How is BIOS 1005? Got my board yesterday, case arrives today, going to put it together tonight. If it's not BIOS 1005, should I flash it immediately before I change settings, run stability tests, and install WinXP?

EDIT:

It appears it's 1005 preinstalled. I hooked everything up last night, 5 1/2 hours of work (Using an Antec P180 case, so theres some significant effort with cable routing :-)

Didnt work at first, booted, checked drives, but no video... was too tired, so went to bed. This morning I hooked up some speakers to the onboard audio, and heard it state that the VGA test failed. Reseated the video card, everything worked great!

Now to stress test it.

Setup:

Antec P180 case
Antec TruePower2.0 550W
ASUS A8N-SLI Premium
Athlon64 3700+
eVGA GeForce 7800GTX
2GB Corsair TWINX2048-3200C2
Western Digital 160 GB SATA-II

All cables reach with the A8N-SLI, TruePower2 550W, and Antec P180. A bit cramped though since the power cables come up from down below. I may take out the lower fan (the PSU already has a fan) for more room to stuff cables down below.

I am a newb...so please be gentle. Can't figure out why one of my video cards keeps dropping out of SLI during game play. Both cards are working fine separately. Both PCI Express slots are working. Tested both cards separately and got 3DMark05 scores in the mid 7Ks for each one. After enabling SLI mode, my score is around 11K...which is what I wanted. However, after a certain amount of time (which varies) my frame rates slow down. When I run 3DMark05, my scores are back in the mid 7Ks. At first I thought it was heat issues, but my chip temps are well below threshold and my case cover isn't even installed at this point. I have discovered that if I disable SLI in software and then boot up in single mode...and then re-enable SLI in software and then re-boot in SLI Mode...I can once again achieve the 11K score. Then I wait awhile (anywhere from 5 minutes to 2 hours) and Boom! back down to mid 7K. Any ideas what might be causing this to happen?

Will I need to flash the bios to support the X2 and if it needs an updated bios am I likely to experience any post problems?

no updating the bios is very easy. Make sure when you get the latest bios
its not a beta version and all should be fine.

These can be found on the Asus website with the bios flashing tool.
