Hi,

I am having a similar problem and want to make sure I don't do any irreversible damage.

I had a power outage and subsequently my laptop gave the UNMOUNTABLE BOOT VOLUME ERROR.

I put the drive in a USB enclosure, but although the drive is recognized by XP (after a while), trying to open it results in e:\is not accessible.

I ran CHKDSK and this is the result:

Microsoft Windows XP [Version 5.1.2600]

C:\Documents and Settings\Paul>e:

Does this look like it is recoverable with CHKDSK r or f? Windows recommended f, but users in this forum seem to get success using r.

Any other tips in this case?

Thanks

Ive tried both chkdsk i:/f and /r and both end up with the same error.

"An unspecified error occurred."

Now when I try to open it, it has I:/ is not accessible. The parameter is incorrect.

Any suggestions?

Folks, I want to thank you for this thread. I moved a 250 GB backup drive from work to home, and when I got it home I got the Inpage Error warning, and couldn't access any files. This same HDD gave me trouble a couple of years ago, so there is definitely something wrong with it.

After a few hours on chkdsk, it says "Adding 2 bad clusters to the bad clusters file" but it now seems I have all my data back and its working again.

Thanks again!

Interestingly, the chkdsk process seems to have created 2 hidden folders called found.001 and found.002. Inside these folders are a random assortment of ancient files, from about 4 years ago. I think they must have been lost when the folder tree was damaged, since the folder tree they were in has disappeared.

To the people who posted this miracle of a fixer I am forever greatful. I thought I had lost over 250 gigs of a lot of rare data I had collected over last 10 years. Not to mention almost every picture from schooling to college and thereon... Your awesome!!

To anyone reading this with the same issue .... DO IT NOW!!! It takes a couple of hours but I promise its worth it !!

Steps for check disk.

1) Click on "Start" and go to "Run"
2) Type "Cmd" then click on "OK". Now a Dos screen will appear on your computer.
3) Type "Chkdsk /r x: " X is the letter of the drive that you want to test.

It might take abit of time to run this if the disk got error. Once it run, please let it run to the end. It will take a few hours for this to finish.

All the best

Unless there's something wrong with my search algorithm, you do realize there isn't a single reference to a "Jhon" in this entire thread?

Or, were you referring to the "John M" post from Mar 21, 2007, 10:25am UCT

edit to add:
You wouldn't by any chance be trying to build-up "creds" here on HWA in order to later SPAM us, would ya?
