If you have "Error Performing Inpage Operation" ..its 100% usefull command..
1. Start > Run > type in cmd then click OK to get a command prompt.
2. Type in chkdsk e: /r (replace e: with the drive letter of your external hard drive).

This won't do any harm, it will fix errors on the disk and try to recover data from bad sectors. It might not solve the problem but it's worth a try.

Just about 1 week ago, my fujitsu laptop got the "blue screen of death" and my laptop would not load past the logo loading stage, would not go into any type of SAFE mode, and I was just unable to fix it through bios or any other way.

So I decided to remove the Hitachi IDE HDD from my laptop and purchased a 2.5" external enclosure. In attempt to recover the data, i received "Error Performing Inpage Operation"
i thought it was due to the enclosure, so i brought it back to Fry's and had a tech take a look at the HDD. He told me that it would cost $150 to do a "possible" recovery (he was unsure if he were able to retrieve the data).

So i decided to purchase a different 2.5" external enclosure (i-rocks). Pluged it into another laptop (my sony & my dell) and received "Error Performing Inpage Operation" I attempted to use Magic Partition 8 Pro, but it was unsuccessful in recovering the data.

So I looked through many google searches, until i found another program which was recommended (GetDataback for NTFS).

This program is CURRENTLY RECOVERING MY HDD as I am typing.

Basically, i created an image file with GetDataBack for NTFS of the Hitachi IDE HDD into my 500GB Western Digital HDD. Then, i used the same program to load the image and index the files. From there, i was able to copy all the files indexed (all to the my external 500GB HD).

From the look of things, my pictures, music, movies, documents have either been recovered or recovering right now (5/11/08 3:20PM West Coast Time).

My suggestion, give GetDataBack for NTFS a try! It works

Will miracles never cease
Tried chkdsk g: /r ...fixed my g drive which was an extended partition on my WDC 200 GB
Smart drive said impending failure and had to hit F1 to finish boot to WinXP. g drive not accessible "inpage error" as above. Drive now passes WD diagnostic test but i backed up all my data. Previous to all this the drive would make wierd buzzing sound and would blue screen. i was getting blue screened to death and thought it was a heat or memory issue. fixed heat problem and replaced memory with no help. i think blue screens finally took their toll on the drive. i have been running the computer for 24 hours without a blue screen which i have not been able to do for 6 months. My WinXP install is now 3 years old and running quite well.
Thank you all

35 years ago I was in the process of learning MS DOS and from time to time I still use it.

Just recently my hard drive wouldn't load windows completely and it kept resetting as in a loop.

The first I did was use the chkdsk /f /r command and after a couple of hours later, my HD was working again.

It's nice to see that what I learned in the 1970s still works today.

Cheers.

My 250gb WD hard drive was acting up in some generic external USB 2.0 hard drive enclosure so I just picked up a Rocketfish external HD enclosure (also USB 2.0) from eBay for about $15.

I plugged it in and received the same error.

Came across this thread and the CHKDSK /r utility worked for me!!!!!!!!

I absolutely had to register to these forums just to say thank you to all who contributed and to let you know that this thread is still helping save hard drives!!!!!!!!!!! :)

John M you SAVED my life! My portable hard drive has all my powerpoints, worksheets, tests,...for school. Every digital picture of my family and all my personal music. I would have had to have been locked up in some institution if I could not have recovered my STUFF! THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!!

P.S. The guy at Seagate had no clue what to do!

pppphew!! Am i glad to have come across these few pages! Have had all the above symptoms on my external HD for days now, ie G: drive showing in MY COMPUTER but unable to access contents. It has only today flagged the "inpage operation" error. I googled it and bingo, the chkdsk thingy is a thing of beauty. My wife would have strung me by my "potatoes" if we had lost the family pics & her work.
BiG THANKS to whoever posted the solution.

Why are so many people in such a panic over losing data? People! Back your stuff up! You don't need any fancy programs, or have to learn any fancy instructions. Just install another hard drive and periodically copy the important stuff to the other drive. Then unless you have a lightning strike or power surge your data is safe on another drive if your root drive eats the big one.

Fully agree with you Mr AngryHippy, but in my case the drive in question WAS my backup drive (external). Perhaps i am over-anxious regarding storing 8 years of family photo's & the wife's work but the PC's power-supply unit caught fire twice & we have lost files previously when the system argued with itself. Also, i have tried CD's but on one occasion (& the last) the files could'nt be read(?) when i later required them. Is there any really safe method of storing digital stuff long term? Anybody??

Archival CD's. The metal in the CD coating breaks down, especially from long term storage or exposure to light or air containing contaminants like smog. Archival CD's use gold which makes them a bit more permanent. That or make hard copies of the pics. Which defeats the whole purpose of back up digitally to avoid the color breakdown common with analine dyes used in commercial photo printing. I'm not sure about computer printers. The few pics I have had for awhile seem OK color wise, but the paper is yellowing rapidly. Most likely there is a high acid content in the paper. I never looked into any archival quality paper.

These are the best archival CD's but they will cost you about $1.50 to $3US each.

Yes chkdsk/r works wonders... if you aren't near your hard drive's capacity. But for those of us who have used up most of our hard drive, it's useless.

Hi,
I have been trying to do chkdsk on a hard drive which I took out of my Toshiba laptop and put into an enclosure because I could not access on the Toshiba. Every time I try and run chkdsk using cmd, I get the error "Cannot open volume for direct access". If I try to access the hd on cmd by just typing "F:" I get "The device is not ready". Any ideas how to get past this problem?

Thanks in advance.

This fixed my problem thank you! And in response to the person who said, just backup your stuff, thats not a super easy thing to do. I have approx 16 terabytes on about 40 hard drives, not an easy thing to back up.

I'm doing the chkdsk e: /r now and getting lots of "File record segment #### is unreadable". Is this typical while it's going thru the process?

Thanks.
