Hi,
I've made a clean install of Win XP over Win 98. Everything seems fine... except the sound. I can't hear anything: no system sounds, no CD, etc. It was perfect in Win 98, though. The media players, Jukebox, etc work well but with no sound.

I own a K7S5A motherboard with the sound device integrated on it. It has a SiS 735 chipset. Well, I've load the newest drivers downloades from ECS's page and everything looked well (the system recognizes the sound device) but there's no sound! I've also tried updating the BIOS but nothing again...

I' know more people had this sound problem. Could someone help me please??? Any idea?

Does the sound card show as enabled in windows?

If you run a dxdiag, can you see the sound card, and will it run through the tests?

and now for the dumb questions (apologies if they sound stupid, but I have made many of these mistakes myself, and I have been building systems for 15 years!)....

Is the mute box ticked in the volume control?
Have you got the speakers plugged into the right socket?
Do you have the speakers powered? ... and switched on?

Do you have a front panel outlet connected to this board, and if so, is this connected properly?

Are you having any IRQ conflicts? This should not be a problem in XP, but I can't remember off of the top of my head if this board supports ACPI.

If you have an ACPI option in the bios (again, I can't remember), is it enabled?

Finally, in dxdiag, under the sound tab, you should reduce the hardware sound accelleration, may make a difference (certainly helps choppy sound problems).

when you installed mobo drivers did u install the on board sound? if you did , and have pci soundcard, [ie soundblaster]. you will have to go into hardware manager & disable one of the devices, ie[ on board ac97 sound / or sound blaster], which ever you disable , make sure you plug the speakers into the relevant socket

I had the same problem -- No sound at all. I used K7S5A with XP1700+. The OS is XP. Everything else is fine, but no sound at all. I tried all instructions listed in the forum, but no help.

The drivers on k7s5a cd are incorrect versions

you have to download from the sound chips manufactur's website.

the soundchip is located near second pci slot

so this on a thread that had the download url but i can't remember it

heres your answer that one person posted a long ass time ago. The drivers that windows update give are incorrect. The drivers that windows normally detects are wrong. In order to get drivers for the K7S5A motherboard at least for version 3.1 that i have you have got to go to sis.com and download the drivers for the 7012 onboard audio. Run the setup utility and when it asks restart your computer and it should be working.

For anyone who still has this problem there *IS* 2 jumpers that need to be closed on the K7S5A v*.* boards in which it does not state in the manual.

Basically there is an Audio Header on the K7S5A labeled "Audio2" this header is used to plug in front audio ports located on most newer cases. In the manual this header has 9 pins as #7 is the KEY pin. There needs to be 2 jumpers placed on this header if rear audio jacks are to work they are: -(as labeled in the manual)

#5 - AUD_FPOUT_R - Right Channel Audio signal to Front Panel
#6 - AUD_RET_R - Right Channel Audio signal to Return from Front Panel

to Clarify.. #5 and #6 pins to be closed with a Jumper

#9 - AUD_FPOUT_L - Left Channel Audio signal to Front Panel
#10 - AUD_RET_L - Left Channel Audio signal Return from Front Panel 20

to Clarify.. #9 and #10 pins to be closed with another Jumper

If you decide to use front audio in the future with the K7S5A you will need to remove these 2 jumpers to plug in the connectors for front audio ports and in turn will disable your rear audio ports again. both front and back ports can NOT be used at the same time for this mother board.

Hope this helps everyone out!!
