Does anyone know how to open Compaq Presario 2100 Notebook chassis?? I try un-screw all screws in Compaq Presario 2100 Notebook chassis bottom side but I fail to open. It look like there are two screws located at the center of chassis.

I have the same problem, the screws seem to be below the plastic cover but I cannot find a way to take the plastic cover out. Anyone has a sugestion.

First thing is that you have to open from the top as well. The speaker cover and the power-button strip are attached to the hinge covers of the screen. There are two screws behind the hinge-cover that need to be removed. Don't worry, this wont make the screen come out. Then the whole strip with speaker must be removed carefully (it snaps in place and it might be hard to get out at first). Remeber everything (the hing-cover, strip and speaker covers) all come out at the same time, so dont force it or you will break them. Once you do this 4 more screws disconnect the keyboard from the notebook. After you do this, you will have access you need to get rid of the two big screws in the middle and you can actually get into alot of different parts of the laptop without lifting the whole top off.

Hi, I own a Gateway Solo 5300 and am having the same difficulty in opening up my chassis. If I unscrew all the screws and try to separate the top half from the bottom half, the side with the modem port is still stuck. I'm afraid of trying to apply force to get it to open up. Does anyone have any ideas?

It was very hard to figure out how to open my Compaq Presario 2100 Notebook. I thought that once I had opened it it was going to be something very simple. So I looked at something simple to do and thats when I figure out to take the keyboard out to locate the scres.

So my advice is to not apply force, I can assure you there is a screw hidden somewhere. I don't have one of your Laptop but try to think what you can remove to have access to the area it is stuck. For example take out HD if possible or maybe the keyboard or Screen.

excellent..

I have a 2100 myself, and was wondering how to get into it :)

as I said in another post, already done the HD and Mem thing.. so if I can get in, I might see if I can do aything with the video chipset and maybe CPU, that is IF I can find a mobile athlon supplier!!

I also had recently to open a Gateway Solo 5300, and the trick is (after having removed all the visible screws on the back) is to pop out the keyboard. That reveals another screw near the hard drive. Once you got it out, you're done !

Hope that helps...

I have noticed a lot of people are trying to figure out how to open the Compaq Presario 2100. Here is the link to the manual that will tell you exactly how to do that.

http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c00246219.pdf

I found this to be the least user friendly laptop to work on out of any I have ever owned. My Dell laptop opened so easy. This one I was about ready to throw in the trash I was so frustrated with why it was stuck in the middle and I could not seem to get to the screws there. Pop a bottle of champagne or something when you get it open because you'll deserve it after all the screws you have to take out and the funky way you have to go about it just to accomplish this!!! If you are like me, I have a powercord problem where it recessed back into the case on the motherboard and unless I open it to get past the plastic casing and plug the cord in directly, it makes an intermittent connection, eventually quits charging, runs out of battery, and dies. I've found others on the web that have had the same problem but of course no recall on it, and with no current warranty Compaq will not fix free of charge.

Happy Repairs,

Brenda Masalin

This is a long-lived thread! Yet the prior information seems relevant, so I'm continuing within this thread:

I'm trying to open a Compaq Presario 1210. (FWIW, the case says 1200.) I've removed the power-button strip (referred to as the keyboard cover in the Service Manual PDF given above), but don't see how to then remove the keyboard. The manual says to remove four screws, but then again it's for a slightly different model

I'm trying to open it because someone tripped on the power cord and the machine landed on its wireless card, wrenching the internal PCMCIA slot out of place. (There also seems to be a problem recognizing the CD; something may have shorted out when it was powered on. Sigh.) More on this when I get the thing open, perhaps.

A bit later:
I disconnected the wire harness and flat cable connections from the monitor, then removed the final two screws holding the panel on. (Be cautious if you do this; the cables are fragile.) With that, it was possible to remove the keyboard - though looking at it once the keyboard was out, removing the panel may not have been necessary. It may be that the touchpad and speaker part pops up and forward first, and then the keyboard comes out. At any rate, it's done now. But lo! The screws are clearly not meant to be removed by mortals: They're somewhat similar to torx screws, but sloping inward to a shallow point. I guess it's time to invest in fancy tools...

Okay, it sounds like my Compaq lasted longer than most, but now I can't get a reliable connections for power. Thanks for posting the manual. I am sure that will help me get into the machine. I am curious, has anyone had any luck repairing thier laptop for this power connection problem once they got the machine open (I need to check the other forum threads still). I ask because I'd like to pass along this laptop to a nibbling (that's what we collectively call our nieces and nephews), but not if it is going to need to be rigged in a way that only I would feel comfortable manipulating it.

Thanks in advance.

Just wanted to say thanks for info on opening.

The power socket on the board had broken free, without the info never would have got in.

Was about to resort to cutting away the bottom corner of the case to get to it.

Considering the time I spent probably should have done that anyway.

NOTE: removal of the connector bolts on the serial and parallel ports caught me out for a while

Regards

Where to buy. I bought it from Digikey.com about 5 years ago

They sell a lot of DC Power jacks used in laptops. Hope this helps someone as much as it helped me. :)

Anyone know where to get a replacement touchpad? My left button has partially jammed and only works when I press the top right corner of the button.
