I discovered a possible fix for most people. I suggest also upgrading your bios.

I'm posting this on other sites. Please help me spread the word.
=============
I have a P4 1.8
asus p4s333 with sis 645 chipset
1 gig of ddr 2700
xp pro

I tried from May 2002 to March 19, 2003 to get it to stop crashing.

Absolutely nothing helped.

Tried upgrade bios, added memory, tried nvidias suggested motherboard tweaks, turned everything off using a program called "end it all". Tried at least 6 different drivers, and overclocked it. It did not one bit of good

I decided last night that was it and I bought an ATI 9700 pro.
This installation instructions say you must upgrade your AGP controller by going to the makers of the chipset on your mother board. I thought, maybe that could help the nvidia card so I downloaded and installed the agp driver and low and behold problem was solved. My tv card used to crash if you moved around or sized it to much, movies used to crash. games too. I tried running 1 movie then 2 then 3 movies at once. They all work like they were alone, then I added the tv card and the put the cpu at 100%. 5 min later it crashed. I tried maxing out msflight sim and combat flight sim, no crashes.

The down side to all this, I'm keeping the ati card I spent $300 for.
Its 110% faster can you blame me. <he he>

I can't say it will word for everybody, but I bet none of you have tried this, so go do it.

SPREAD THE WORD!!!

my machine used to crash too after start mechwarrior under winXP/directX8.1 with the nvidia drivers version 3something

I used to think there was something wrong with the game until last week when I got UT2003 and it crashed too, I updated the directx drivers to version 9, (get them from http://www.microsoft.com/windows/directx/downloads/)

and the nvidia drivers, from:
http://www.nvidia.com/content/drivers/drivers.asp
(make sure you get the version 4something, I'm pretty sure I updated my drivers last month just after the installation of the card and somehow I ended up with a version 3* while the version 4* is dated 2002, go figure)

now both games run fine.

PS you may need to turn off your anti virus before installing

I am having crash problems when running 3d games mostly . I have an Asus P4s333 sis 645 ( ive already downloaded latest agp drivers for sis 645) and Geforce 3 Ti 500 .Also tried almost everything from a software point of view ( detonators, bios , directX) but nothing helps. All games start fine but at random times usually after 10 -15 mins they crash or freeze. Any suggestions ...

I have got the same problem.

I launch GTA3 Vice City I play 5 min then the game freezes itself if i do not press ctrl alt del to end the game, my pc reboots.

In some forum, some guys told that it was because i had a integrated sound chipset, but I bought a sound blaster pci 4.1 and nothing has changed.

I have the last nvidia drivers, the last bios and via drivers for my motherboard, winxp dx9... so everything recent...

If somebody finds the solution please tell me, I can't play 3d games since I bought my pc (9 months ago).

AMD Athlon 2000+ on MSI Kt3 ultra
256 ddr PC 2100
Geforce 4 mx 440 64ddr (ennyah)

Please heeeeeelp.

Laurent.

I have the geforce 4 mx 440. I would say it is the biggest waste of money I have ever spent. It will run more stable if you run it at high performance or performance setting in the nvidia media center. you also need to have the latest directx and the updated agp drivers. Warning on the agp drivers. If you are running windows 98 the drivers will overwrite your atapi layer and you will not be able to use your cdrom. if you do these three things then you will have a semi stable card. Best advice is get a new card. I am as soon as I get an extra 200 bucks.

I also have the same probem:
I have a MSI MX 400 Nvidia 64mb video card and when I play GTA vice city my PC restarts after about 3 or 4 minutes and its really annoying. My specs are: Intel GRGL board, Intel p4 2ghz CPU, 512 mb of RAM MSI MX 400 Nvidia 64mb video card,
I also have Win XP, DX9. How do you reckon I can solve this????
Thanks

Can anyone try this.
I used to have a problem with my geforce rebooting earlier. I then had a problem where everytime i played a game my comp SMPS would blow
I had the SMPS changed from a 300 watt to 350 watt. I then had no problem for sometime until later when i got a new game. I was playing return to castle wolfenstein and then i got vice city, matrix and splinter cell.

I think the ips cannot hadle the power demands of the graphics card with all the extra components. I just got a new more power ips so cant afford to try and get a 400 watt smps.

have

AMD Athlon Xp 2000+
512 mb ram
creative sound blastre live 5.1 de
Pinnacle PCTV card
DVD reader
CDRW
Creative Inspire 5.1 5200
and a 19" Monitor

If anyone can try get a higher power SMPS or by removing some hardware(like the sound card, wich i refuse to try since i am not too hardware savvy), and then see if the game crashes.
I might be wrong but its a hunch

If someone can try this and does and it works pls let me know
I know how anoying the crash is
thanks

This applies to all people getting lock-ups and blue-screens after some time of playing, this hasn't got anything to do with the drivers of anything
if i'm guessing right, cause i had the same problem with my geforce card.
the problem was that it would always lock-up after extensive use.

It just got too hot.

i got the solution, this worked for,(if it doesnt work contact ur motherboard manufacturer and also run the AIDA diagnostic to check if ur a runnning at 4x) i also installed servic pack 1 and other updates i can almost guarantee this will work
there are two things u need to do,

1st if u got AMP u need to install the large page minimum patch,
Go to http://www.amd.com and search for the windows 2000/xp agp patch
while u r there also download the agp driver pack.

Next try this , i have an asus a7n 266 vm motherboard which uses the nforce platform,
Go to the nvidia grphics driver page,
here there are three boxes,
ist box has the following options
1.graphics
2.platform /nforce

select the second then select the windows xp option and u shud cum to a page that gives u the unified drivers, this is what u need. download it and install it.

these two things fixed my problems. another thing it did was make my card run at 4x which was by default earlier running at 1x,
i discovered this when i ran a diagnostic calles AIDA, search for it and download it , it tells u everything about ur comp.

This shu do the trick, the unified drivers is wht is most important,

please let me know if this works,
plus try to have a smps of at least 300 watt power supply, ur card is a big drainer..

I dont no why it does it. I've been playing this game before on my old Compaq computer and hasnt crashed ever. On my new one(about 1 year old) has been doing it lately and has been rebooting itself.!!!

My Computer Info:
Intel Pentium 4 - 2.4GHz
Memory 520 Mb
AOpen AX4B533 Motherboard
Windows XP Service Pack 1

One thing i've noticed is that sometimes the crashes that have happend normally relates to the desktop. If i'm playing i might accendently right click and then it crashes. I'm not sure what the problem is.

If you have any ideas please respond.

You guys are all lucky...

My monitor switches to standby about a second after the mouse pointer appears! Every boot!

I have tried the new and old NVidia drivers, AGP drivers, removing memory, removing all the other cards in the system, reinstalling windows...

I dont know what to do next...

Specs:

AMD Duron 900Mhz
768Mb Ram
Windows 98 SE
PC266 M810 M/b
SiS 720s Chipset
A Open GeForce4 440MX 8x w/ tv out
Direct X 9.0

Well Tom Moor, it seems to me that your system is fine, but your geforce is probably defect, that's the only way i think it can be.

Ok, I've tried everything i could think of to fix this and the only thing that worked was upgrading the OS to Win2000 and installing the latest Java runtime from Sun.com.

All the video issuess have dissapeared compleatly now and the video card is performing fantastcly.

Oz.
