Hello all, I bring to you guys a strange problem I've got on my Toshiba laptop since one week ago. Basically battery isn't charging anymore. When I put it back on the laptop the charging lamp comes on for 2 seconds and then comes off. There's no charge at the battery, if I take main off computer dies immediately. But Windows XP ALWAYS acuses 46% of charge on the battery, and says not charging as well. My battery didn't get end of life because I rarely use it and keep it off the laptop and was holding full charge, not used more than 50 cycles. Facts: 1) I know the battery was full discharged from last time I used, about 3 days ago problem appeared. 2) I got some virus/spywares days ago, do you think it maybe afected Bios?

Thx !!!!!!!

I had a similar problem when my battery got fully discharged. I ended up buying a seperate charger and then had the same prob, it would positively charge for short 2-5 second intervals.

This worked for me: allow the 2 second charge, remove power adopter cord, re-insert again and again. The battery will slowly charge and after 20 times the power supply board will acknowledge that there is indeed a battery and charge fully. Don't let the battery full discharge after this point however.

Good luck

Have also seen this being resolved by insert battery after Laptop on and OS running on mains for 5 mins then leave to charge. Do not let go into suspend mode during the intial 30 mins.

have read in some review that toshiba does have a problem with batteries. they have said publicly about their satalite series batteries not having enough long charge in them. in my experiance the toshiba statalie A60 at full charge does not last more than one hour and that is in a good day with limited use. they also have a heat management problem. but other than that they work great.

Thx Pdx Topper, I did what u said and I thought it won't work, maybe because I left the battery flat for about one month time, anyway, I did that procedure many and many times and nothing. misteriously I was using the laptop today and I realise battery was charging, and now looks like fine. That's it,

It may be the same problem, but with a different model. I can repair the problem for you if it is the same as with the A75-S226. The details are on the forum. I am also working on a class action against Toshiba for the defect.

I just had my motherboard rebuilt hoping that would fix my charging problem. My laptop will now run, plugged in, but it's still not charging. I'd love to be a part of a class action suit. I've wasted a lot of money on this machine. I've had a variety of laptops and never had problems like this think has (and cost as much). I called Toshiba Support and they told me they couldn't help me since it's not under warranty (they wouldn't even talk to me about my problem).

Dear PDX,
I will try your method, hope it will work. Anyway, I will through out Toshiba very soon and will go for other brands.
Toshiba must improve their battery technology. The battery problem caused works delay and interrupt the concentration on works.
I have already canceled my plan to procure TOSHBAs for my company because of this battery inconveniences.

:( MY TOSHIBA was a pain in ass constantly crashing i had to re install visa every 3 months or so and now the power supply has gone wonky !! IT WILL NOT POWER THE LAP TOP OR CHARGE THE BATTERY. An expensive repair at around 130 its not worth the spend as that is its second hand value, so i an looking for a large wall to smash the bugger against good riddance to poorly manufactured garbage. NOT A GOOD EXPERIENCE OVERALL.

I have the EXACT SAME PROBLEM! I am on my 3rd battery. I finally realized that I was not buying defective batteries, but that the Satellite system is not charging. I will try what you are suggesting. THANKS!

Hello all. I've had very similar problems with my Toshiba satellite 1110. After some fiddling about I used to be able to get it going but now it as died completely. No amount of discharging/charging turning off-on/plugging-unpluggin will get it going.
I would be happy to support anyone who decides to bring a class action against Toshiba on this issue.

I have two Toshiba's with the same problem. I would support a group letter to Toshiba with our threads before I would threaten them with a class action suit. Threats usually backfire and are not really worth our time?

So who wants to send the letter?
We would need model, serial, date of purchase, Name, Address, phone.
The more information we provide regarding the behavior the better.
virtually everything but our SS number too.

I had a student send in this error report. I couldn't believe my eyes it was beautiful! I had the machine fixed in my mind before I even got there.

"My computer has been malfunctioning lately. I don't know what happened to
it, but I do know that others have been using it while I'm not around.

The computer is "thin44", located at my cube inside MSC 1335. It turns on
and off (as I can hear the fans), but there is no output to the monitor, and
the front green light doesn't come on, although the one inside (on the
motherboard, I think) does. I checked thoroughly for loose cords but did not
find anything obviously wrong with the computer or the monitor.

I would appreciate it if someone could look at it when they have a chance.

Thank you,"

Toshiba notebook: Satellite L650 -03E
CPU: i3 M350 @2.27 GHz
OS: Windows 7 Home Premium, 64 bit OS
RAM: 4 GB
Warranty: 1 year expired a month ago.
Overall a good condition, but the same issue with the battery/charging unit. For some reason the system detects 0% battery charged but the charging does not start. Connecting/disconnecting the power supply cord does not resolve the issue. The battery LED was off all the time.
So I tried this and it worked:
1. I shutdown the system
2. unplugged power cord
3. physically removed battery
4. connected the power cord back into the laptop
5. inserted battery back into the laptop without starting OS
6. The battery LED light turned on. The battery was charging.
7. I started OS and it showed icon that battery charged to 2% and it is continuing 17%, etc.... until 100% charged.

I have the same problem - power on not charging - on my Tosh Satellite A100 - about 4 years old. It just started a week ago. Up to now I had no problems with Toshibas. And I had worn
out three of them. I will try your suggestion.

Have you guys tried using an aftermarket Toshiba laptop battery? Perhaps Toshiba ran a bad batch of batteries.
Looks like it could be a few things.
-The laptop battery itself has failed to take a charge and needs to be replaced.
-The laptop charger is defective (Most likely not the case). Here's an aftermarket one.
http://www.ebatts.com/toshiba_satellite-p25-s487_laptop_accessories.aspx
-The laptop itself has a defective issue internally with charging the battery.

Hope someone figures out the issue.

A good friend of mine has a Satellite. Whenever I need a charge, I just ask him!! My computer works fine but will not charge the battery anymore!! I bought 2 new ones so gave him one and I have one. Too bad I don't have an old Satellite to use just for charging. Stupid unfixable problem!

You might check the contacts/connectors inside the battery compartment, or look at the battery to see if any of the contacts/connectors look slightly deformed compared to the others. With a connector problem, sometimes what works in one system doesn't work in another.

It could be something in the electronic charging control circuitry, but it makes sense to take a VERY THOROUGH and if at all possible at least a 4X magnified look at the connections first. I know some battery case designs make this very difficult.

Also, if possible try slightly varying the pressure (and perhaps slightly deflecting from side to side) on the battery connection point while it "should be" in charging mode...use the battery status application and see if any battery status indicator changes while you're doing that. Also, you may or may not be able to do similar manipulations while following the Maksimovic instructions in the earlier post.

While manipulating the battery, be gentle. I suggest using no more than about the same amount force it would take you to lift a side of your notebook a few inches off a tabletop.

And, IF the battery connectors are female "blade" type, if you have access to them you can try inserting folded paper into each slot. If you find a slot that lets the paper move with a lot less friction than the other battery slots, that connector may be not making a solid connection while inside the computer. It's not a 100% diagnostic and in addition the manufacturer may have also designed the battery to use thicker blades in the high-power connectors and thinner blades in the "sensor" connectors so such variation could be entirely normal.

Hi,

I had the same issue. Finally ended up getting a new adapter. I found some useful info also here:
http://www.originalacadapter.com/blog/?p=21

Lots of times, one needs to just remove the battery and boot up with the ac adapter plugged in, and then after shutting down, re-install the battery and usually that takes care of the issue.

Well mine is a Satellite L 755 and I ma having just the same problem.

I have discovered that if I remove the charger and turn it off or hibernate it, then it will charge up. But of course this means that I cannot use it till its charged up again and that is a pain.

I do also do the unplug and replug, routine described by other posters.

Join my for the case !

I sn anyone also finding that they keep losing their internet connection? I dont think I will be recommending Toshiba to an friends in future.

Eduard ~ How do I join your class-action case? Do you have a website for doing that?

My Toshiba Satellite (A105-S101) is almost 7 years old & the battery was replaced once by Best Buy under warranty, but that one stopped charging within a year. I called Toshiba Support to figure out which battery to buy & was told the BIOS is set for running off only a 4-cell battery, not the new longer-lasting 6 or 8-cell batteries, at a cost of $85. I didn't buy, figuring I may as well buy a new laptop or the latest mobile computer when it comes out.

However, the AC adapter cord doesn't sit firm & any slight movement can cause it to stop AC power & use the battery, which only retains a 1-min charge. I'm about to buy a new tablet that's coming out with Windows 8, but not sure which brand to get now.

In addition, the harddrive went out 2.5 yrs after purchasing & was replaced by Best Buy under a 3yr extended warranty that cost ~ $300. BB sent it back with a new HD, but kept the old one - supposedly they drill a hole in it & return it to Toshiba for reimbursement. It had highly sensitive information on it & I had a helluva time getting BB to return it. Had to threaten BB with a lawsuit & their lawyer emailed me a lengthy explanation - along with the HD. What a racket!

So please let me know (email is okay) if you have filed a case against Toshiba. TIA.
