Hello Peeps,

Hope someone can help me. We have a Toshiba Lap Top Equium A60. P4 3.06 GHZ, 704 MB Ram, XP Home Edition SP2. 40GB Hard Disk

Normally my wife uses this machine for work so we don't have many games on it. We recently Loaded Rome Total War onto it, as it didn't work too well on our rickty old P3 machine.
Rome total War works perfectly fine, but we heard of the Excellent Rome Total Realism Mod. and been a couple of History Buffs we wanted to give it a go.
Simple I thought, copy the Rome Total War Directory to another place in the C Drive and load the Mod onto it.
Well for some reason we can't copy and paste files on C drive.
I've tried right click Copy/paste, The Drop Down menu in windows Explorer Cut/Paste, and even Control C / Control V, but still no files copy :(
We then tried to copy other thing on the C, and those too do not copy.
I can't think why that is, we can load programs onto it and delete them, we just cant copy files once on C.
The laptop is wirelessly connected to a router so it has access to internet and i'm wondering if somehow when we did that we created a security feature on the C drive that prevents copying files??? Just a wild guess.
Most grateful if someone can tell us why we can't use Copy/Paste on our Harddrive :) :)

Thanks for any replies :)

Fran

Control panel/folder options/view tab. Check box for "show hidden files and folders. Go to root/documents and settings/your user name/local settings. Make sure you have a folder named temp (not temporary internet files). Open the temp folder and delete everything in there. 2 or 3 files won't delete. That's OK. Go to my computer right click / properties. In System Properties window go to advanced tab. On advanced tab hit environmental variables button. Under user variables for (users name). Make sure both temp and tmp are pointing toward root drive:\documents and settings\your user name\local settings\temp (root being your OS's partition letter usually C). Don't mess with anything in the system variables window. I don't know if that will fix your problem, but that's how it should be set for the "copy and paste" function to work. the copied file resides in the temp folder till you're ready to paste it.

Also check the web site of the game to see if this is a known issue and if they have a patch. Also check the forums as well for add. info.

Thanks for your reply Payton it's much appreciated.
I have done as you have suggested, but still no luck.
I have however noticed something strange with the C: Drive on this Laptop.
When I right-click any of the Folders including the Program Files folder and those folder inside Program Files
I see in General/ Attributes that the "Read Only" is Checked. I can Uncheck it and press "Apply" but nothing happens. I looked on our old computer and that field is unchecked, so I don't know why the Laptop has it and inparticular why it takes no notice of my removing the read only and pressing "Apply".
I have the following security programs as well:
AVG
Spybot Search & Destroy (This last version put a Spybot-SD Resident on my Tool Bar)
AD-Aware`SE Personal
Windows Firewall

Could one of these programs be preventing me from removing the "Read Only"? Or some other setting on the Laptop?

Thaks for your help !!! :)

Payton thanks for your help :)

I've fixed it, I just don't know what caused it, it was so weird, but out of desperation I did a System Restore, and suddenly Copy/Paste is working again.
The curious thing is that in Program Files/Properties/General/Attributes the "Read Only" box is now filled in Green...... I just don't know what triggered it or how it was re-set.

Thanks for Helping

Fran

Doubtfull. I'd dump the Windows firewall though and go with Zone Alarm. Free but much better. The Spybot logo in the tak bar is tea timer. It warns you if a program is trying to install, change your home page, or write to the registry. It then stops the action and asks if you want the change. I use Spyware Guard which does the same thing so I have Tea Timer disabled. It is part of their Resident program along with SD Helper. If you open up Spybot, go to mode on the top and switch to advanced mode. Click on tools in the left search bar and check the Resident box on the right. Then hit Resident on the left panel and you will see Resident SD and Tea Timer on the right. Check or uncheck the boxes to enable them or disable them. If you aren't using something comprable, I'd suggest you enable both. They are good apps, but only the Tea Timer (dumb name. never could figure exactly what that meant) will show in the taskbar.

The folder is just that. Basically a container for files, and as such, the read only status is normal.
