Hi there,

I've just turned my reserve PC on to get somethingh from the stored files I have on there and its come up with this message on boot up...

"Primary hard disk drive 0 not found" - F1 to retry, F2 for setup utility....

On F2 it goes into the Bios, but thats all beyond my capabilities - so need some help...

I havent changed anything in my PC, as in removed any hard drives etc.... so why cant it find it...

By the way the PC is an old Dell OptiPlex GX110, P3, 533 MHz

Its running XP, but I have no XP software to reboot from scatch...

Any help would be greatly appreciated..

Cheers

Sounds like the drive has died. Remove it, jumper it as slave, and install it in your regular pc in the middle connector on the IDE cable to see if it works on that system.

That's a tough one Gary, there's dozens of different reasons why the HD isn't being detected & yes it could be dead.

You should F2 to enter the BIOS first off & see if the BIOS even detects the HD, seeing the age of your PC you'll likely need to try to autodetect the HD & see if the BIOS see's the disk's parameters, if it does than you can rule out a HD failure. Even if the BIOS doesn't see the HD all is not lost yet, it's just move helpfull if the BIOS does see the HD then you can focus on the software issue because you need to determine is whether it's a hardware or software problem.

Hardware of course being the HD itself, the cables or the MB, one thing I always try first is replacing the CMOS battery & resetting the BIOS making sure to follow the instructions specific for that MB.

Software problems include missing MFT or boot.ini, chkdsk can cause major HD problems for NTFS partitions also. If you had a bad shutdown the last time you used the PC & chkdsk ran it can rename all the directories on the boot partition making it impossible to boot.

Without a XP CD or an ERD (emergancy repair disk) it's going to be very hard to pin down the problem & find the solution. If you know someone that has a XP CD I'd go borrow it & try booting from the CD, then you'd have the recovery console to help further.

One thing to keep in mind if you get a XP CD & recovery console is unable to help odds are chkdsk renamed the files & directories at the root C:\, best thing to do then is do what Chris suggested & attach the HD to another PC running 2000 or XP then get the data you want off & reformat the HD. You can also do what I do & use Norton Ghost & make a image of the HD & then use Ghost Explorer to extract the data from the image, IsoBuster & some other programs can extract the data also.

First, I work w/ a lot of GX-100's and all the way up to GX-270's
This usually happens to me when I use a computer w/o a cd-rom plugged into the other IDE cable (i.e. not the one connected to the hard drive)

This is exactly what I see when the cd rom isn't present. Whether the power isn't plugged all the way into the cd-rom or the motherboard, or whether the IDE cables aren't all the way in.

PLEASE make sure that these cables are in securely, no matter how much they appear to be.

In your bios you should see the hard-drive present, the cd-rom, both, or neither. Which is it?

Also, w/ GX-100's, the SFF slim cd-roms have gone bad on me. Can you try inserting a bootable Cd-rom to see if that works? If you try that, make sure it's selected to be bootable and comes before your hard drive in the boot list.

sorry i forgot to mention, i have two cd rom drives connected to the second ide channel, and its not an optiplex, its a Dell dimension 2400, all cables are fully connected could the battery have anything to do with it, because i read somehwere that it could be an answer to my problem? also in the bios the hard drrive is not connected but the cd roms are, even when i switched from primary ide to secondary ide and back, the cd rom drives were found but not the hard drive...even with the newer hard drive. thanks Slim

SOOOOOOOOO!!!!!! Whats the answer? Mine is doing the samething. I updated an eTower 500. Installed XP takes the program. On the reboot no system found. Check BIOS no hard drive, but CD ROM listed as my first boot. Hard drive third, but nothing there. What now.

make sure it's selected as a boot device. just b/c it's on the list in your startup options doesn't mean it's selected as a bootable device. you know, sometimes there are check marks beside it. if it's unchecked, that means... well im sure you get what im saying. probably wont help, but i messed w/ a computer at work for 20 minutes before i realized that was it.
but if it doesn't appear on the bios, and messing w/ the jumpers doesn't help, i'd say it's non-working. it's shirley time for a new hard drive or maybe a whole new system. don't use emachines. theyre bad.
not to plug my company but we have some very low-priced systems, free-shipping.
search eBay for the seller id: kevin kuntz. we're the one in texas

How would I make sure it is a bootable device? In my BIOS the only thing detected is CD_ROM. Nothing else. I have tried 2 hard drives. At first it worked fine. Later nothing. What order should my devices list in BIOS Boot section? My thinking is something got moved around???? I have also changed the battery on the Mother board.

This has happend on my server a few times, I just shut it down, wait a few second and fire it back up.
I though that it was the sata issues that XP/MS always has.
You need to ensure that teh memory has cleared as this can sometimes be the fault esp if there is a virus hanging arounf in there.- proberly the main cause.

You should swap out the cables and location of the disc. If you can download and try "UBCD" this can and will test your hardware.
You can try booting into dos then just key the directory listing for the drive.. C:/ Dir
Its always easy to tell if the drive is dead, pop it into another computer, see if it shows at boot.

Things to try,
Reset BOIS
Change all lead to the drive,

Thanks. I switched ide cable from my CDRW, and used it to power up my hard drive. Worked. I was sure my hard drive wasn't dead. I was in the middle of installing XP pro, and when it rebooted to finish the install. That is when I got no system found, and no hard drive detected in Bios. The only problem now is I have no CDRW as I am useing that ide cable to power my hard drive. So is it safe to say I need to change my ide cable from my mother board to my hard drive? I did go ahead, and finish installing XP pro onto the hard drive. Works fine. When I checked BIOS for the detect it had detected the hard drive as a secondary slave. I don't care about that just that it works. How all this started. Is I was given a eTower 500 for my granddaughter to have for high school. As I couldn't afford to buy new. So I upgraded the RAM from 64 to 256, and that worked fine. It had a DVD ROM drive, and I added CDRW I had. It detected that fine. It had a 10GB hard drive (Maxor), and in the begainning all worked fine. Then as I said later when I went to install XP pro fresh after reformating the hard drive. That is when the problem started. It took the program just fine at first, but on the reboot? Nothing. So my question is. Should I change the ide cable, or leave it alone? I don't know how to jumper the hard drive to make it a primary drive. I have the jumper clips, but not the know how.

Thanks Shirley

You can get jumper info from the makers of the HDD and CD , This would be the cause of the issue as the system was looking in the worng place, You may find that now the install is complete that it will funtion correctly, How ever if it dont want to start unplug the IDE to the CD. By even guessing where it needs to be you should get it about right.

You wont do any damage trying.

Rory

I changed to idl cable no change. I will try disconnection of the CD as that is what it wants to use to boot the hard drive. So at this point it will only run in the CDRW place. With only the DVD on. This is crazy as all computers are. I will get back.

Just stick in an older version of Window. All you have to do is get the install CD and boot from the CD/DVD room upon rebooting the machine. Make sure that the first boot device is set to CD drive in the BIOS. When prompted to press any key to begin the Windows Setup, do so.

Every consider that the onboard IDE controller on the motherboard might be failing as well?!? If the onboard IDE controller is malfunctioning... You would get the same results..
At this point, You would have available two options to this problem.

1.) Replace the motherboard.

2.) Disable the onboard IDE controller through BIOS and insert a IDE controller Card into an available PCI slot.

That's what I had to do and every thing was working fine again. Option #2 would be a better bet in the long run. ;)

Best Regards,

DrWho...

Yesterday while working on my laptop (Dell inspiron) bought October 2004 i heard a crank noise...then it asked to restart the laptop...on doing so it took long time to boot...so i had switched it off manually...while tried starting again i found it doing some chkdisk process which ran 3 steps 1st..after that it stopped booting and shown "Primary hard disk drive 0 not found" error....while i did a F12->Diaginistics it failed on hard disk, everything else was success.

Please help as how to proceed. My main intention is to recover the data from the hard disk and 2nd to get the laptop working.

Well, sounds like you have a bad drive. The sound is a give away. Plus the all-of-the-sudden failure of it to work. You can forget it being a bad configuration setting unless you went into the bios the previous time and changed it there, or something else profound. How did it go bad? Probably improper care, like physical mishandling or lack of running defrag. If you have a legit version of xp, make sure you have whoever fixes it just replace the harddrive, and don't pay for a new license. Hope you have restore cd's or original disc.
