How long did it take for your first crash or lock up to occur. I'v played quake III on my setup for 4 hours so far with no problems. I just built it last week

Asus P4g8x
p4 2.4 gig
1 gig (2*512's) of corsair xms ddr400
thermaltake 420 watt psu
ati radeon 9700 AIW pro

I haven't updated the bios, and I just used the catalyst 3.2 cd that came with the radeon 9700 pro.
Does anyone make/sell 1gig sticks of DDR sram

Not sure if this helps, but this was in a review on Hexus.net:

http://www.hexus.net/review.php?review=493

"Finally we installed the latest ATI Radeon drivers and the machine was re-started.

We discovered a couple of annoying quirks with the system when running the Radeon 9700 pro. Firstly the previously recognised fault with the Granite Bay chipset meant that the system would re-boot it’s self after about 10 minutes, this has been found with all the Granite Bay boards we have tried and is resolved by turning off ‘SmartGear’ in the advanced display adapter menu. Secondly and unique to the P4G we experienced a cold boot graphics problem that we were unable to resolve. When using the DVI monitor connector and booting the P4G from cold the display did not activate until the windows drivers had started. This means that you can not see the dos boot screens nor the bios. Once Windows has started the display comes to life and performs as normal. The problem only occurred with the DVI connector and was fine using VGA, when the motherboard was re-booted the normal service was restored and the boot up screens displayed normally."

wanted: I need a broken 9700pro built by prefered but doubt its necessary. In removing the aluminum plate over the memory ic the glue was too strong and pulled one of the timing ic chips out. No indications of what chip it is so I cant just order one......so if anyone has a 9700pro that is fried or cracked or jumped on or whatever I will pay or trade parts.
Let me know through the message option if interested!

I keep reading this thread and am mystified and stymied at the fact that people keep thinking it is the chipset on the p4g8x. Someone correct me if I'm wrong here....but the p4g8x uses the e7205 Intel Chipset (A.K.A. Granite Bay) and ricky's new mobo...the p4c800 uses the newest Intel chipset out there...the 875p Also by Intel....(I believe the code name is "Canterwood") Now then....it is clear that this is 2 seperate and distinctly different chipsets....and yet ricky's problem remain in his newest mobo....the p4c800. That tells me the chipset IS NOT the problem. It has to be something else. I say the video card drivers.
That is my guess.
Am I crazy??

Again I would like to reiterate what seemed to be a fixed for my PC.. I started raising my AGP/PCI Freq in the bios up until the system ran stable. I got this idea from ASUS tech when they told me to raise it to 67MHz. However 67Mhz didn't seem to solve it, but raising it more did. I am running it now at 70.26/35.13 and my system has been perfectly stable for days now. I have run 3Dmark03 numerous times and have been playing 3D games.. etc.. with not one lock-up. I was having them constantly before. My last post has much more info on this and I would like to know if anyone has tried it and if it helped or not.

See my last post on Apr 22, 2003, 10:29 PM

Other Pertinent Settings:
AGP Voltage - 1.6V
Video Cache Mode - USWC
AGP Aperture - I have mine on 256MB, but I have 1GB of RAM too
You might try 128MB first if you have less than 1GB of RAM.
AGP Mode - 4X Mode ... 8X doesn't increase performance any
Fast Write OFF .. Fast Write ON doesn't inc. performance

Good luck all!

Thanks de laminack, I appreciate your taking the time to post what works. These are the identical settings I have been runnig and my system has been stable for over a week now.
The problem, the way I see it, is now so much right now...but in the "not so distant future" when titles like Doom 3 come out and we will need all the speed and memory bandwidth we can muster. Such as Fast Writes and 8X (which is why we all bought these cards in the first place----speed)
So then, maybe we should all relax for now with these settings, and wait until ATI or ASUS or INTEL steps up to the plate and takes care of the issue before there is a mutiny.
I hope these particular settings will work for everyone for now. Catalyst drivers are due out very very soon. Maybe that will help

Mike; everyone else who are linking the E7205 and 875 chipsets because one of this forums contributors got a similar error.

This person (sorry; forgot your name) experienced "low"bit colour and low resolution with both the ASUS P4G8X and the P4C800 with a Radeon9700Pro. I believe this has to do with power consumption; the board and radoen (and rest of components) is sucking up to much juice for the system to keep stable. This is what ATI told me when I talked to them over phone a while ago, and this problem disapeared as soon as I received my 460W Enermax.

I read earlier in one of these forums that a guy with a 350W Enermax, just like the one I had, also could not achieve enough juice for his system, very similar to mine.

So lets worry about the infinite loop, and the problems directly related to "Granite Bay". This chipset is one of the buggiest ever to be released, because of the load of new features and Intel's hasty schedule with not enough time to do the proper research. I should think the "Canterwood" and "Springdale" have been "more lucky", there are no reported major errors as of this time.

I believe everyone with the "GraniteBay" should claim new MoBo's form their retailer; get something that works!

(same if you have old Radeon which is unstable because of the production line number and BIOS; explain to ATI/others and ask for a new; info. for all card's RMA found on ATI's site)

I personally don't believe it is a power supply problem, although I wouldn't rule it out for everyone. I for one am running a 350 Watt PS from Enermax, and after raising my AGP/PCI freq to 70.26/35.13, I have not had a single "infinite loop" lock up since.. and that was on April 20.. 7 days ago.. I haven't had the guts to try running it in 8X AGP or with Fast Write ON as of yet, besides I have run tests with these ON before, and saw no improvement in performance. Might see some in the future, but I am sure that is a ways away, until then, I will run what I have and hope ASUS or ATI or Intel will come up with a sure fire fix for this problem. As far as I am concerned, my system IS FIXED by setting the AGP freq higher, and as long as it runs with no lock-ups, I am happy. Performance is outstanding, and I have no plans for attempting to return any parts.

Good luck all.

Just as an FYI to everyone, I just purchased and installed a new retail Asus P4C800 and I'm experiencing the EXACT same hanging problem as you guys. Luckily i've avoided the post and infi-reboot problems though. i was previously running a P4T-E and had no issues at all.

My 9700pro is retail ATI and the only fix i've found so far is to roll back to 3.0 catalyst (from 3.2), but when i do this the card is only detected as a standard '9700/9500 series' card and the performance is in the toilet.

Based on some of the troubles i've read on this forum i'm reinstalling XP again so i can start a real trouble shooting process. I'm going to ghost everything but i plan on (hopefully) skipping alot of the crap you guys have gone through. First i'll try what works on your MB, then if that doesn't work for me I'll branch out.

++++++++++++++++ATTN: SIMON SHAW+++++++++++++++

Has your system been stable with the new 460w ps running in 8x mode with fast writes on...? In other words....all features fully enabled as advertised? And you have what mobo? P4C800 or P4G8X ??

I've only had the P4G8X, and I've never run stable with fast-write on. Only way things are stable is with:

fast-write: off
write-combine: on
8xAGP

memory turbo: on
USWC
128MB apert.
1,5 volt AGP

-one notch up on AGP/PCI speeds
-no overclocking

EVEN THEN SYSTEM HANGS NOW AND THEN; NOT OFTEN THOUGH, BU NOT GOOD ENOUGH

system:

first prod.line Radeon 9700Pro (ATi-built)
460W Enermax PSU
2x512MB PC2100 TwinMOS
2,53GHz P4

Waiting on validation of return on the MB though, going for the 875-chipset. You folks who've got it already, give us something to chew on in the meantime. Experiences, settings, perfomance...?

!!! PEOPLE, SEND COMPLAINTS TO YOUR MOBO-MANUFACT., INTEL AND ATI. LET THEM KNOW OF OUR PROBLEM !!!

Experiences with the P4C800 mobo:

I"M GONNA SOLVE MY PROBLEMS ONCE AND FOR ALL AND BUY LEADTEK GF4 TI4600, I DON'T CARE IF THE RADEON IS MORE POWERFUL!!!! THEN I'M GONNA PUT MY RADEON UNDER A GODDAMN HUMVEE AND HAVE THE SEA BEA'S GO TO WORK.

My new Enermax 460 W power supply now makes a low, barely audible intermitten tone(electrical noise?) that is bugging the hell out of me. It was not doing this with the P4g8X i had before. I don't know if this is normal but none of my old Antecs' did this. How much power does this card suck up? I'm going to build a RAID 0 set today using the on board RAID so i'll let you guys know how that went.

After playing with the settings, i managed to crash (16color) my box when i changed the OpenGL and Direct3d settings. I haven't tried to repeat this because i've made up my mind: this card is going to be destroyed.

The P4C800 has more features than the old board. I'm gonna stick with the current stable bios. I did have some early weirdness going on though. 2 beeps during the ASUS boot logo, then another beep for POST. After flashing the bios, clearing cmos, and flashing again i'm only hearing the one beep for post, which is good i guess. It's this damn card, i know there were revisions. But ATI will not admit it to it. Every damn compenent ever made always go thru a revision, nothing is made perfect the first time. I'm going to bug them everyday until i get my new Leadtek.

I guess this is payback. After building dozens of computers, lo and behold the one with the ATI card gives me problems.

This is a lesson for all of us: live by the sword, die by the sword.
The leading edge sword that is.

Well i like to say ..... just wait for the new release of the ATI driver catalysator 3.3 and new full bios as 1,04 or 1,05 for Asus motherboard. Well actually this really suxx ..... we all bought those here to get 8x agp and more speed and power ..... , Main board "Dual ddr" to feel the speed. Well we can only wait for those new patches or drivers or bios. If this doens´t fix this .... we have to mail those company ASUS and ATI for delivering back those hardware. I have only use those hardware now in 3-4 month now. So they better dont mess upp cause i have one 1 year Guarantee left :D HAHAHAHA...... SCREW THEM !!!! for f**kING THIS s**tTT !!!!!!...... EVERYONE ... MAIL THEM AS HELL ATI AND ASUS .... THEY SHALL FEEL THE PAIN THAT THEY RELEASE ....... Muhahahahahha

I wish I had a running problem I can't get mine to post. I have a Asus p4g8x deluxe and ATI AIW 9700 pro with 1028 Crucial 2700 memory and a Antec 1080AMD performance + case w/antec true power 430w power supply running WinME. When I go to post the fans start spinning and stop almost immediately. If I disconnect the power and s/u I get a screen telling me to connect power supply to card. I have tried 3 different power connects. I am now running the board with a GF3 card and having no problems I also have s/u the 9700 in an abit board and it made it through post into windows just fine. I have the new 1004g bios and have tried setting AGP at 4x and 1x with no success. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,Delemma

You can try smashing it to smithereens and getting a Nvidia!
No....just kidding...we have to keep our sense of humor at all times
You can try these setting in bios:

Advanced:
agp/pci freq: 67.26/33/63
agp voltage: 1.6

Advanced Chipset:

Mem turbo: enabled
AGP aperature: 128mb
video mem: USWC

try those...it has given the majority of us some success...i addition to fast write off and 4x agp

good luck

That sounds kind of like the problem I was having originally not getting my machine to post after a reboot. But upgrading to the latest BIOS fixed that problem for me.. You, on the other hand, have already done that.. and it didn't fix your problem, curious..

Well, moving the AGP voltage to 1.6v totally solved all my crash problems w/ the 9700pro and my new P4C800.

The system still seems sluggish and my benchmark scores across the board on the new system, 2.5ghz p4 and 512 xms pc3200, are lower than those on my old system, 1.8gz p4 and 512 pc800 P4T-E.

I'm still new enough to the MB to not be sure of what a lot of the settings do, but I can tell you that I'm stable running at 8x agp with fast write enabled.
