Enermax PSU, 460W, Whisper Series - def. crashes

(doubt very much it's all up to the PSU, have you all forgotten about the defects in the E205-chipset)

If you are running Windows XP.. go into your Control panel and look in your Device Manager. Under system devices you should see the following:
Intel(R) 82808 DB LPC Interface Controller - 24C0
Intel(R) 82808 DB PCI Bridge - 244E
Intel(R) E7000 Series Processor to AGP Controller - 2552
Intel(R) E7000 Series RAS Controller - 2551
Intel(R) E7205 Series Chipset Host Controller - 255D

Among other things.. you should see these... If you don't you have not loaded your drivers for these hardware devices.

You need to install the Intel Chipset Installation Utillity.

I recommend the one that came with your Motherboard CD.

I am running version 4.10.1012 that came on my ASUS CD. There is a newer version on the Intel Web Site (ver. 4.30.1006) but after reading the release notes, this version does not have any fixes or enhancements for the E7205 chipset, so I would not recommend it.

After raising my AGP/PCI freq in the BIOS to 70.26/35.13, I have not had any problems in almost 2 weeks.

See my previous posts for more info.

I hope this helps.

I got my pc working, but I still have to fight with the system crashes.
It crashes while i´m playing games OR working in windows.
Dono why, changed all drivers, the card got a little bit hot so i decided to add a 120mm cooler, but still the crashes.

Julian.. have you gone into your bios and raised your AGP/PCI Frequency setting??

I kept raising mine, by suggestion from ASUS Tech Support, until my system quit locking up. I ended up running 70.26/35.13 MHz. You may not need to go that high. It may work, may not, but definitely worth a shot.

Releasing of Catalyst Drivers 3.3 to be cancelled! - 3:21 pm EST - G.I.Bro
Sorry for getting this info out to you a little late, I've been suffering from major ISP problems today. But anyways... Yes this is correct. Today ATi has officially canned the release of the Catalyst 3.3 Driver set!! Don’t be too worried though... The 3.4's Cats are soon to be here.

CATALYST 3.3 has been cancelled and will not be posted. We will jump over to CATALYST 3.4 this time and the time frame we are looking at right now is May 12th-15th (now do NOT hold me to that) Its not a promise just that is what the schedules are looking like at the current time. These drivers are currently in the hands of our beta testers and going through the final run through. If all goes well you guys will get them in the time frame I mentioned above and you will be very happy with them. They will have performance boosts across the boards, some bug fixes, some new features, and of course the best image quality in the business!
That message was directly from Terry Makedon (CATALYST maker) himself.

Be sure to drop by our forums, seeing that Terry is holding a Q/A session about this outcome"

Well, I have this two and I have the same error...I want to change the ATI Radeon 9700Pro for another video card, cause I like too much this mainboard to change it. What video card should I buy? (I want at least same performance of the ATI 9700Pro)

Is there any incompatiblity with this mainboard and the ATI 9800Pro?

Thanx a lot!

I finally solved my problems by exchanging my P4G8X for a P4C800. The P4C800 is a much better motherboard (mine has the built in Promise RAID controller, for a total of 3 parallell ATA connectors (2 UDMA 100, 1 UDMA 133), and 4 SATA connectors! Totally insane, I couldn't get that many drives in my case if I wanted to.

I'm running at AGP 8x, no problems. I'm pretty sure my Radeon 9700 Pro is a pre rev 30 board, I got it at a developer conference before it was even released to the general public. I haven't checked the rev number on the board though. But in any case, some people were saying that the manual for the P4C800 stated that it only supported rev 30 and up Radeon 9700s, which isn't the case. It simply says that for maximum overclocking stability, go with a rev 30 or newer board.

I highly recomment exchanging your P4G8X for a P4C800 if you can. My supplier was very good about exchanging mine. They even let me swap my PC2100 memory for PC3200 (I had to pay the difference), with no restocking fee.

Michael, I am happy you have enjoyed some success at resolving tthis issue.
I also bought a p4g8x only to swap it for a p4c800, but unlike you, I have been experiencing the same problem....just not as frequently. I was not even able to run at 8x AT ALL with the p4g8x, but with the new mobo, I can. It locks up every now and then, but I have been benchmarking my system with 3Dmark2001SE and there is virtually no difference between 4x and 8x. Maybe a few marks...and that's it!
Lets hope the new cat drivers fix this once and for all.
At least I satisfied my curiosity about the Granite Bay chipset. That wasnt the problem at all like some people are thinking. Maybe it is worse with the granite Bay chipset, but the chipset on the p4c800 (Canterwood) still does the same thing...just not as often. I still contend it is a problem with the ATI card.
If the next batch of drivers does not stop this locking up crap once and for all, my card will be for sale and I'll get the new 5800Ultra as soon as its out.
One crash is one crash too many in my opinion. We pay the most, we should expext the best. Case closed on that issue.
To all those who can live with it crashing every now and then, I wish I had your patience. I pay top dollar...I want the best. That is the way it is.

I'm having the P4G8X but cannot return it. The Radeon 9700 however, I can. I'm thinking of trying the 9800. Does somebody know if this is worth a try?

Thx

I built this machine about 3 weeks ago:

P4G8X Deluxe
2.4GHz P4 533MHz FSB
2 gigs ram (4 512MB DDR266 (pc2100) running in dual channel mode)
Antec TruePower 480W PS
ATI AIW Radeon 9700 Pro (built by)
Buslink 16x/48x DVD-ROM drive
Buslink 52x/24x/52x CDRW (bought at Best Buy for $10 after rebates :)
WD 40GB HD
WD 120GB HD

bios settings:

AGP/PCI Frequency set to auto (66.66/33.33)
AGP Voltage 1.6v
Graphics aperture 64MB
Graphics Memory Cache Mode UC
AGP set to 8x

ATI properties settings:
AGP set to 8x
FastWrite off

nary a crash in 3 weeks, 3DMark03 scores between 3330-3350

I just noticed today that I was in UC mode instead of USWC so I have reset it to USWC, I will post again when I see if it is as solid with that setting.

I had wandered in here just after ordering the parts for this setup and was a bit freaked out by the prospect that I had made a big mistake by picking these two pieces of hardware, so I am pleased with the results of my build.
