I also found another company that will even replace the power jacks.
http://www.pcdoc.bz

I have had one done & have sent other people there as well with great success.

>> Joe,
Would you be willing to buy my laptop?

Although the plastic is broken in a couple places, it's missing screws, and shows the wear and tear of being taken apart amateurly(sp?) many times, all the parts are functional and work extremely well (except for the unknown problem). I just replaced the LCD screen recently.

The book value for a new Z1, was, when I bought it, $2400.

At the sony shop, the prices for refurbished Z1's ranged from $1500-$2000.
Edit: Sorry about that.

Seeing as I have no use for it, I'd be willing to sell it for much less.

Send me an email if you're interested.

I just wanted to add my 2 cents:

I am also an angry VAIO GRX owner. I started experiencing system freezes and then half of the RAM was gone half of the time.

I tried the little straw trick in the RAM module as suggested and it worked for a while. After some months the computer wouldn't start some times.

The real answer was sending the laptop to Joe K.

I have only positive things to say about Joe, he really takes care of his customers, everything works perfectly now.

Bottomline: if you have a faulty VAIO, take it to Joe. If you are thinking about getting a VAIO... DON'T.

my next laptop wil be a mac.

Mauricio

I have a problem with a Sony PCG-FX150 while booting. I'd added a 256MB chip in the 2nd memory slot and it worked fine without any problems for almost a year. But lately I've been getting the blue screen when I slightly move the display or pick up the laptop to move from one place to another. I tried removing the memory from the 2nd memory slot and still the same problem. I used it without moving it once I was working.
Now the problem is become more serious. I tried to add a DVD/CDRW combo to the machine and had to open the machine. When I put it together and powered up, the fan started, drive/power lights came on, but then a strange noise started coming from the processor/fan.. a sort of very low grinding noise as if a motor is trying to pick up speed but can't. The screen didn't come on.. no SONY splash, the hard drive didn't turn and then after a few seconds the fan was dead. Repressing the power switch didn't boot it either.I trieed various ways to boot it up. Removing the memory from slot #2.. etc but nothing worked.
I tried pressing the processor area on the left and back corner of the lapptop from below and then trying to power it on. The fan finally started with the same grinding noise, the lights came on, but the hard drive didn't turn nor did the display get activated. As soon as as I let go of the processor area from below the fan stopped. It looks like a loose contact on the motherboard on the processor side.

Any ideas to fix this?

Thanks

Thank you Joe, you are very kind man ;)

They wrote me e-mail that it need only the new display - we will see. Nothing mention about the darker strip from the buttom to top (I hope they check it on external display!!!).

But I am a bit worry because another troubles which I remain to them check as the batery capacity max. 15 minutes (I think only 10 most time..) they told me that they didn't find trouble !!!! and with CD/DVD driver which damaged my CD's/DVD's (with small dirty or scratchy 2mm round points) they didn't check till yet... :o

Joe, please. To this bateries. I think I read here that when the capacity is going down to early (after 3 months of using!) that it can be trouble with charging - that it is charge for short time and not for 100% if it show it on batery charge window in notebook.. Have you any suggestion to this trouble? Have you any experience with the trouble of CD/DVD driver as well?

Thank you for your time, Hana

Another non-booting VAIO. My GRZ630 stopped booting this morning. I could hear fan and harddrive spin a couple times, then nothing. Even the BIOS "sony" splash didn't come up. After removing 2nd RAM chip, it started working again. Has anyone heard anything from Sony about this yet?

I have an fx370 with the memory problem. I was wondering if any 512 chips work, I've seen a bunch on ebay. It appears that I should have pc100 RAM, but no 512 chip exists apparently. I only see pc133, will this work in my computer?

I don't know how to search this thread, but I've spotted mentions of using a piece of cd or some shrinkwrap? Do you just lay this on top of the memory chip?

Also, how do you tell if it's the soldering that's gone bad, or the plastic that's worn down?

>> Pressing down on the memory socket
Many people have achieved a temporary fix of their Vaio memory problem by squeezing something between the memory cover and the socket (calling card, heat-shrink tubing, etc.).

THIS IS NOT RECOMMENDED!

If too much pressure is applied (and there's no way to tell how much is too much), irreversible damage to the mother board can result. Even if you get lucky and manage to get it going without ruining it, it will only last for a little while, and eventually go wrong again.

Just get it fixed.

Hi Everyone,
Adding to the list, I am another p**sed-off owner of a SONY PCG-GRX520 laptop. I first bought it in 2002, and I had a RAM upgrade to 512MB at the dealer. The problem started last May, when the computer suddenly refused to boot, and occasionally it would freeze in the middle of something, so I started switching around the RAM chips and sometimes taking out one, and leave it there without power overnight, that usually solved the problem

For the last year, I have been leaving the computer on stand-by the whole time, it still freezes sometimes, and it RARELY reboots on the first try.

the problem got really serious last week, and the thing absolutely refuses to reboot AT ALL, and the few times I managed to reboot it, the thing just freezes shortly (3mins or so) after I logged into Windows.

So my question is

1) could this be the RAM socket soldering problem that everyone is talking about on this thread?
2) how much would it roughly cost to fix this problem? Anything more than 500 Canadian and this thing is out of the window, right away.

Greatly appreciate it if you guys can help me out here!

Thanks!

Dylan the p**sed-off vaio user

Hello everybody with a ram slot problem:

It seems that very often only the second slot is affected (as it is in my GRX416G).
So even if Sony does not tell of this possibility, if you want to upgrade the ram, just put in a larger module in the first slot. I've tried it with 512MB - worked fine and now I have a 1 gig module in the first slot - also works fine.

This solution is stable and cheaper than a repair!

Well I guess we are members of your bad vaio club now...Could someone familiar with this thread please repost the fix about applying pressure to memory? 57 pages of posts and we're having trouble finding it. Also, have looked at Tom Pappa's webpage and would like to also know Joe's rates for repairing Vaio boot failures. Thanks very much.

My GRX 570 is 4 years old and not working now. It costs about $149 + shipping = almost $200 to fix the memory slot issue by Joe. I am debating to but a Dell for about $700 for a top notch laptop (they have almost 50% off discount now) or send it to Joe. I wish Joe can lower the charge since he has been doing that for so long now.

You've had it for four years - about 200 weeks.

So is a dollar a week too much to pay to get it healthy again? ;-)

Dell isn't known for their "Top-notch" computers. It's worth it to get yours fixed.

Joe, what do you say about buying my laptop?
