Sony returned my VGN-S1HP today--no packing note to tell me what the problem was (!) or an apology for the hours I spent trying to diagnose ....... but it boots, well so far!

HELP PLEASE!!!!
My Sony Vaio PCG GRX 570 is starting up but my screen is black. This started about a month ago, and I would shout down my Vaio a few times and it would boot up. But not anymore. I turn on the power button and the yellow light for the battery comes on but the light for the hard drive dose not come on. The screen is black. On top of that my warrant just expired. Help please HELP.

>> Sony VAIO, FS215B, Totally Dead, Or Just needs a battery,
Hi There,

Hope this is the right forum to post this but here goes:

Ive just been given a VAIO FS215B by a friend (lucky me!) as its faulty, But he didnt give me the battery and has since moved away, So;
The fault looks like this:
Unit is totally dead when AC adaptor is plugged in, would not having a battery in casue these fault symptoms?
(I have read in some other posts on here that, sometimes laptops wont do anything without a battery, but i tried my other Toshiba laptop without a battery and it powered up and worked fine on the AC Adaptor alone)
Is it common for this series (or any kind of VAIO for that matter) not to work without a battery?)
The thing that makes me think that its not a faulty mainboard, is when you test the voltage from the charging connections (where the battery is meant to fit) you get a voltage, so this makes me think power is getting through, (nothing shows up when the AC Adaptor is not plugged in),
Doesnt look to be the common "ram slot" fault, as ive tried pushing on the cover, and still i get no signs of life!
So please help me!!!
Thanks for your time,

William

It could be a dead computer, but maybe not. Check this page:

Thanks to you all for your help,

Hello William, if the machine hasn't been used for a long time the internal rechargable cmos battery might be flat.

On some machines this makes it appear totally dead (FX-505's for example).

Try leaving it connected to the mains for 4 or 5 hours and then try to turn it on.

If you need more info on checking out the memory sockets then I have info on my website listed below.

You have to remove the memory cover and press directly on the memory simms themselves to check the sockets.

I have the same problem as everyone else with my PCG-F180.

Quick question:

If I move the RAM to the other slot, will it delete my saved files?

D M , I am assuming that the files are stored on the computers hard disk, so they should be fine.

It is possiable to remove the hard disk and read the files off it by connecting it via an adapter into a desktop machine, but that is technically complex.

It depends on how valuable the files are.

William I have had a search for the specs for your machine and it appears to be a newish one with a 740 centrino processor. It's worth checking the warranty status with sony before really trying anything with the machine.

It might be a blown fuse on the power input, so you really need a charged battery to see if it will boot.

I could have a look at it for you as I see your based in the U.K.

Hello Araz, if your warranty has only just expired it's worth trying Sony as they might do a free repair.

Otherwise as you are in the US I would look up Joe's posts previous in this listing as he offers a repair service in the US.

You can try the jamming bits of paper to keep pressure on the memory simms. This is a temporary fix at best but it will let you get to your files on the machine.

Hi Bruce,

You seem to really know your stuff when it comes to vaios!
Errrm, Just a few things about it that i thought may help you,
Ive checked the voltage at the charging points and its showing, (obviously when plugged in nothing without)
from the various different pins, From one of them with the end its showing, 4.64 volts and the other 2 its showing 0.75, cosistanly, Does this help you in anyway, I thought it may show that power input is working ok???

When I get the battery ill check it through,
Thanks again,

William

William , those voltages sound low - but these days with lithium batteries often the laptop charging circuits won't do anything untill it has 'talked' with the chip in the battery, and hence if the circuit doesn't see a battery it won't attempt to charge one.

Back in the old NICAD or NI-MH battery days things were much easier.

Also the fact that you are seeing some voltage when the ac adapter is plugged in would infer that the internal fuse hasn't gone.

Hi Bruce,

Ok, Yeah it hasnt had a battery in, (well not when its been with me anyway. and i dont know the last time it was used,)

Is the fact that internal fuse hasnt blown a good thing or a bad thing?
I mean, is there anyway of knowing that the whole mainboard gone?
Im just wondering how many things there is possible to be wrong with it!
Anyway,
Thanks again,

William

Hi,

Just read my previous post and looked at how stupid some of my questions sounded,
What I really meant to put is, Just how many parts is there that could have gone wrong to cause this problem?
I suppose its pretty hard for you guys as i havent testd it with a battery,
Bruce, judging by your answers to my questions, it looks like the vaio can sense wether it has a battery or not, So I guess it can tell itself not to come on without a battery, In one of the very far back posts it somebody says that some laptops wont start without there batteries as a saftey feature, as if theres a power surge, they send all the excess power to the battery,
Anyway, Ill await delivery of the new battery, so i can diagnose a bit more!

Thanks again to you all for your help!

William
