Hi there,

I have a PCG-Fx140 Vaio that stopped working. Just the leds lighting for a few seconds if I press the On button and the fan going for a few seconds also. I tried the RAM tricks you guys are talking about, but no use. I have taken it to a repair shop, they have taken down the CPU and tested it on a different unit and it worked. Since I am in Romania and it costs me to much to send the laptop to US or else for repairs, can you tell me what the problem might be?

Rita,

Sounds like the CMOS battery might be dead. I think the touchpad has to be removed to gain access to it on that model.

Joe,
I am back to the same problem again with the FX150! the laptop was working fine when i booted it. after two minutes the touchpad and the keyboard will not respond. it froze again. i had to turn it off and restart. it worked again for two seconds until it froze again. but it froze when i try to move the laptop slightly on the left side!!!! it is so fragile now? what do i do!! is it because is old? not sure what to do anymore. I am wondering if it has to do with the new sony keyboard i just installed? also, the access panel screw is not screwing anymore so the panel is lose and can open easily. wondering what the case can be?

any thoughts? I gues my poor aunt won't have a free laptop after all. :(

Monica,

Because the power button bar will no longer accept the lock screw, this tells me that the metal lock that the screw screws into has probably fallen into the laptop. Remove the power button bar, remove ALL power from the system, remove the main battery.

With the power button bar removed (and the insides exposed) flip the laptop upside down and shake it, see of the small metal lock backing falls out.

If so, re-insert it into the plastic cutout in the power button bar underside and remount and re-screw the lock screw.

Thanks for the advice, I own a GRX570 and have had "bad luck" since the day I bought it. I sent it to Sony just ot have it returned after they reformat the HD. It has misserably failed for two painfull years. I had to buy an external monitor. Stupid enough I bought a second one in eBay to see if I could get one of them to work, but it failed again. After some desperation I found this memory chip issue posted here. Sure enough, I took two pieces of packing beans and inserted them on top of the memory chips and closed the lid. The laptop seems to boot every time now! Thanks guys for finding this issue. I was about to throw the laptop out the window.

Joe,
I will try that. i knew there was probably that fell. as far as the other issue? do you have an idea why the laptop freezes when i move it slightly anywhere? or if i leave it there for 2 minutes it freezes by itself. the keyboard i installed it's a sony. So far the screen issue has not re appeared.

thank you,

Monica.

i can open a new forum since this issue is no longer related to the memory issue. At least that is what i am guessing now!

>> Re: Sony Vaio laptop wont boot?
I bought a Sony Vaio GRX650 notebook two years ago. After a year I noticed that one of my memory slots is not working (that time I found this very useful forum). This prevented me adding more than 512 MB RAM, but there was no solution. Few months ago the other memory slot started to die. I could boot the notebook only if I removed and reinserted the memory (in switched off state certainly). This helped for several weeks, because there was no problem after the "Sony" text appeared on the screen. But I could not avoid the fate of the Vaio users. Two weeks ago I was not able to boot my notebook at all, no memory reinserting or pushing helped.

I bought the notebook in the US and I live in Hungary, and as far as I know, there is no Vaio service in Europe except for one location in France. What is more, even US customers suffer from this memory slot error and we can form an opinion about Sony support reading the pages of this forum topic.

But there was a happy end after all. I've found a little notebook specialist service in Hungary who had the necessary equipment and could re-solder both memory slots. My notebook works perfectly now and I can use both slots.

The notebook was repaired in two hours and I payed about $100 only inluding urgency fee !!! If it helps anyone else, here is their home page: http://www.notebookdoktor.hu

However, I will consider not buying a Sony Vaio again.

Wow, I don't know if I was pleased or horrified to come across this forum, I am pleased to know that I am not alone as I am another casualty of the non booting SONY VAOI Notebook, My laptop is 2 years, and I struggle to switch it on every day, I experience the same 'flickering' lights problem, the battery does not work anymore and I can sometimes switch it on if it has been off for 10 mins, restarting does not work.

I have rebooted my laptop 4 times in the last 4 months as its performance has been horrific, as I have used it a lot in the last 2 years for design work.

Phoned the VAOI-Link and paid 12.99 (cos my warranty had just run out (surprise surprise)) to hear them blame the problem on my broadband supplier! what a joke they are, I am not even going to bother getting it fixed, and reading all the posts on this thread has given me strength on this decision! As ill only have more time & money wasted.

It is disappointing as SONY had always impressed me with their marketing, smooth design and good looking products, but now I'm staying away from SONY!

Think i'll opt for the virus free world of macs now..

Another nail in the Vaio Laptop coffin?

I have a PCG-GRV616G about 18 months old. I have not used it for a month or so, this morning I tried booting it, fans came on, power LED on, hard disk wurred for a second but nothing on screen. Switched off tried again, same thing. I removed the battery for a bit and re-inserted it, now all I get is the power LED on constantly (orange coloured, sure it used to be green and the battery 1 and battery 2 lights perma-lit). No other activity at all, no fans, no screen. It won't even power down now.

Do you think this is the same problem as described in all the posts or maybe just a consequence of not using it for a month and just needs a few hours plugged in? (I'm praying here, ever optimistic, but its not looking good.....)

Hmmn now just need to decide whether to take the screwdriver or hammer to it.

Just in case any Sony people get to read this - I purchase all the computers for my company. The chairman of the company has insisted in the past that I purchase Sony Laptops for staff members (foolish man) against my advice (he thought they looked nice!). We have had 4 failures within the warranty period (all be it diffent problems than described in this thread). Your customer service stinks, as does your repair service.

I have just e-mailed him this thread, we will purchase your junk no more.

I am so glad I found this board! Now, I don't feel all alone. I have a GRX520 that the warranty expired on August 25th. Less than 2 weeks later my problems started with freezing and now it may or may not come on at all. When it does..it freezes again. I will try the fix I see here with the memory slots. Still, I am very angry that Sony ignores all this. I paid over $2300 and that is lots of money to me. PLEASE count me in any lawsuit that may arise. Thanks to all of you for sharing.

after reading the 24 pages i guess i should try to be brief on my problem

i bought a GRX570 in USA in July 2002 and it worked well till one year after, when it just went out the guarantee year then i had the first problem... the screen went almost black and it only works sporadically... i took it to a sony service center and they wanted me to charge +1000 USD! As logically did not pay that amount, i am forced to use an external monitor... some days ago i began to have the same problems described here... the computer freezes or turnes off, and when i try to restart it then, it powers on, but after a spinning of the hard drive, it just stop... green light on, fan on, but no signal of life from the hard drive.

i did the change of the memory cards and try with only one (memory slot 1 i guess) and it works temporarily but it can crash down at any moment...

i wanted to ask if someone knows if there is a place where i can send it to repair here in Germany where i live at the moment... i also have send all the information i could to start the law suit and hope sony have to pay because of their negligence! it is really unfair that the custumers have to suffer all these manufacturing problems, that should be responsability of sony... after all we entrusted them when buying their product.

i used to be a sony enthusiast, but if this doesn't change i will never buy a sony product again and i will advice everyone else to look to a more professional brand.

thanks in advance for the hints about repairing places here in europe!

good luck all!

Ok - my Sony GRX-560 just came back from Sony repair. $699.00 + tax.= $768.00 (yikes!)
I cant read the herioglyphics of what everything is - its a brand new mobo and cables for it is all I can read. Sony shipped back the old mobo, so what do I do with it? Any suggestions other than the midnight stake burning?

Hi guys,

Here is what I found with my problem.

I tried the memory suggestion here but it did not work. I noticed that
the battery was not chargeing so I used a new battery and unpluged the
power cord. After I unplugged the power cord, the system booted properly.
Then, I powered it down and plugged the power cord back with the new
battery in. Guess what? same problem. It did not boot up.

So I concluded that the battery charger was the problem. I ordered the
battery charger, replaced it, and I experienced the same symptom. It
tried to boot up, the Sony logo was displayed, the hard drive blinked a
few times and nothing happened.

I happened to have another Sony VAIO, which has a different power cord
that supplies 16 Volts. The VAIO I am repairing has a power cord
supplying 19.5 Volts. Just for the sake of it, I gave it a try. I could
not believe it!!!! It was working. Moreover, the battery started chargeing.

The question is now, does anybody know of any issues related to the
power cords. The problem is that I was experiencing exactely the same
symptoms mentioned here related to memory.

According to the user, he has been using a 19.5 Volts adapter since he
purchased it.

Any help would be appreciated.

Jose.
