Believe me when I say that I would love to get a Dell, however, funny thing about Dell.....they are going to want money....something that I lack thanks to Sony. I agree...Sony sucks....but I am stuck with it like it or not.

This morning I was working on my Sony Vaio Laptop and then put it into sleep mode to go eat. Once I came back I tried to turn it back on. No luck. The fan came on and the power light but that was it. I normally get a Vaio logo first then windows starts up but nothing came on the screen. Any ideas.

My situtation is similar. It might be due to lugging it around all the time but my sony pcg-r505el laptop is now freezing on me when I make any movement to it. Anyone have any suggestions as to what might be the problem. Thanks.

Thanks to Joe K. He fixed the RAM problem with my PCG-GRX580; rapidly, professionally and at a fair price.

I've a three year old vaio pcg-fx401 which is currently showing no signs of life, no power lights, no noise ... not a thing! previous to that I had occasional freezes after the power saving cut in but otherwise trouble free.

Does this sound like a loose dc socket? are there any sensible checks I can make before I take / send it to an expert and start to pay?

Thanks

Peter

Yawn yawn - another sucker in the Sony pile...

This time a Vaio GRX-580 after 2 years of admittedly good service, it's decided to boot when it likes, which is not often!

This time though BOTH memory slots are affected, so I've got little option but to wedge the old business cards in there and hope for the best. I was hoping to make do with 256mb for a while in slot 1, but it's affected too. Has anyone else found this with the 580?

Am thinking a trip to Joe K's for the repair will be necessary soon, but live in New Zealand and was wondering if anyone knew a REPUTABLE company here that can do the job, as I'm very poor (having bought the laptop!!!) and don't really want to shell out the courier costs to the US.

If not, then Joe, you've got another customer!

Cheers in advance,

Rob.

p.s. - signed the petition, class law job etc etc...

>> Re: Sony Vaio laptop wont boot? and memory slot error
This is forum i was searching ....finally google found that for me....There is no intruduction needed about the problem happend in my sony PCG-GRZ615G model....coz its not different from other issues ....i have purchased this sony crap 16 months back in London...

STAGE -1

First 12 months there is not problem...3 days after my warrnty expires i found my laptop got only 256 mb ram..(In total 512mb)...i contacted my dealer who got sony approved service centre....they checked My notebook ...and told me it got some problem with mother board...and one memory slot is dead....
Actually the problem happened before warranty...but i didn't checked my hardware profile before that expired ...

They said sony won't accept ...if it is one minute after expiry of warranty........they told me they will charge around 500 pounds for repair....

I have contacted sony vaio e support.....and they told there is a mis matching in my memory modules...coz
They sony genune one was 266 mhz and my dealer upgraded one was 133mhZ (ON PURCHASE)

sony vaio e-support said there might be a mis matching there in memory modules ..when it works lower frequency....
any of you guys know about your memory modules... is it in same frequency......check module frequency...
if it is wrong frequency...you can prove legally ...it is a company or dealer fault....
any way i am planning to contact consumer protection.....

STAGE-2

Now a days i found i can't restart my laptop...once it is used more than 15 minutes....and i found it some over heating problem as well.....I know my other memory module is between life and death.....its like old model diesel engines...you have to cool the engine if you go highland areas....

No more sony products in future.......enough with sony.......VIDEO AUDIO INTEGRATED OPERATION....thast all don't expect more...from VAIO....

Hi Joe

Are you still able to fix a PCG-GRV616G?

Both ram slots are near deathi have to hold them in to get past post & after that it works on one slot.

Unfortunatley there are no firms in UK fixing ram slot issues at the moment.

Do you know if your solution to the problem is a permanent fix?

Regards

Duncan

If you were to turn off the Sony splash screen, and actually view what it is doing, I bet it would hang on "Verifying DMI Pool Data..."

If I'm right, it's a bad hard drive.

Hi Duncan,

Yes, we're still repairing them! Our repair resolves the DIMM slot issues for the life of the system. For all over seas customers we triple check each solder weld to avoid future problems / shipping hassles. USA customers get double checked as standard procedure.

Paul, almost all UK repairs sent to us are being sent via DHL, they may be cheapest. I know for shipping from here back to you is $65 - $69

To: Robert Davies

Hi Rob,

You asked if anyone has seen a problem with the GRX580 and both slots going bad. The only vaio series that's memory slot problem is and will always be limited to ONE slot going bad is the FX series. ALL GRX / GRV / GRZ models are subject to both slots going bad eventually in suspect systems.

Now, please be aware that there are some GRX / GRV / GRZ models out there that don't have a problem and never will. But, the ones that display a memory slot problem will almost always develop the problem in both slots eventually.

Finally I found this forum. I have a sony GRX520 which was bought on Spet. 2002. Last month it always shut down suddenly. You guys said the #2 memory slot has some problems. But why in my system it can
display the full memory I installed in the laptop-2*256MB? I tried different ways to assign the positions of the memorys. It can't help. Sometimes if I put the laptop on a nootbook fan, it will be ok for 4-6 hours. But will shut down again. so I am think if it is the problems of my fan or the CPU temperature is too high? without the nootbook fan it can't last for 4-6 hours. Is the possibility that both of mine memory slots are defective?
Thank you very much.

Add me to the list of VAIO laptop (GRX580) with the memory slot issue. Two questions, with an apology if the solution(s) has been posted before:

(1) Is there a way to fix the problem, acknowledging the memory slot #2 issue and only using slot #1. Cleaning the gold contacts for example, or a creative usage of duct tape?
(2) Has Sony admitted the problem to anyone, and if not, has there been a file for class action lawsuit? It seems to me this was an obvious design flaw, considering the discontinuation of the GRX series, and Sony should be held liable for all laptops with this problem, even after warranty.

Thank you for any assistance that can be offered. I, for one, would recommend to anyone considering purchasing a Sony laptop (especially a used GRX) to strongly heed the warnings of all the past postings. I'll definitely never purchase another Sony product again.
