I have a machine that I am working on for a customer. When it came in, it would hang on the WinXP splash screen, with the "Progress Bar" still going round and round. We reloaded Windows and returned it to the customer, because that worked. It came back in a couple of days, and they informed us that it did it again, immediately after installing iPod software. The last entry in the bootlog was "loading driver fastfat.sys". Not a big deal, after trying a bunch of things we reloaded Windows again to the same effect (Restore points were not doing the trick). They decided not to run iPod stuff on this machine, so we thought the problem was solved, because there are several Apple forums linking fastfat issues with iTunes. Now the machine is back in with the same problem... no iTunes, though. They tell us that it happened right after an automatic update. Restore points are working to fix the problem right now, and the customer has obvious signs of some adware infection.
Am I crazy to think that this is a little to coincidental to be just a software issue? I believe we have ruled out hard drive failure, as we have cloned it to another drive, and can get the restore point to work and subsequently recreate the problem.
The machine is a socket a 1900+ on an ASUS a7n266-vm mobo.
