I have a mouse problem. My pointer like freezes at random times, but the mouse it still working. It's like the pointer stays in one place on the screen but if I move the mouse and click it works like the pointer is still moving… does any one know how to fix this? I’m running WinXP pro w\sp2 , and a PS2 optical mouse on a Dell Dimension 4600

Go to google and stick in the mouse manufacturer and ask for driver - "Logitech Mouse Driver" :-)

Reinstall fresh drivers.

I too now have the same problem. It's very frustrating. I have a new EVGA 7800GT card, and I still have this problem whether I have the original drivers from the cd installed, or the updated drivers from the site. If anyone figures out anything else about this, please let me know. Also, my computer seems to take a while to boot into Windows XP. Here's my configuration

Asus A8S-X Socket 939
Athlon 64 3700+
2 X 512MB Dual Channel Crucial Memory PC3200
74GB WD Raptor 10,000RPM SATA
EVGA 7800GT 256MB
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I've had the same problem mentioned in the original post. I've uninstalled my NVIDIA 81.95 drivers and it fixed the frozen mouse pointer problem, but this obviously isn't a long term solution.

Does anyone know if there is a previous version of the NVIDIA drivers out there that doesn't cause this problem?

Best solution so far:

Install latest beta drivers from NVIDIA which you can get at: http://www.guru3d.com

I installed version 83.90 and I can't make the mouse pointer freeze.

The following forum pointed this solution out and also has a tip for making your mouse pointer unfreeze:

i had a problem like this once a while back on my older pc. what ended up being wrong was that i had a wireless network card, but no router or network thingy set up yet, but the card was trying to connect - so i got little lag spikes every few mins - mouse cursor freezing/music skipping, etc.. until i disabled the wireless card.

probably not the problem, but just throwing it out there.

problem is cause by cd rom access delays
some times when reading and sometimes when burning CDs

other system load or delays do not freeze mouse pointer (mouse and everything else keeps working fine)

the alternative for me was to enable mouse pointer trails and reduce their number as much as possible

not sure but i have killed a 250gig hard drive in heatwave, i was playing toca3
the side of computer case was off i had 2 unplug dvd to play toca3
anyway i forgot to rest case with fan over hard drive to keep it cool

long story short...... i exited the game to find the mouse pointer had frose but still functioned
in a ghost like manner i asume that the mouse controller needs hard drive 100% ok

when i rebooted boot failed so i formatted and started windows install
got to windows detecting devices and mouse started doing same thing
thought this was strange......formatted again with differant partition using lots of cooling
mouse problem gone never came back...........

look after your hard drive!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
to newbies HOW CAN IT BE THE MOUSE ITSELF WHEN IT GHOSTS AND WORKS
