Hi hope someone can help me with this. Have a faulty DVD/RW drive on my laptop that won't read or do anything than spin round so decided to buy a replacement drive. The original drive is a Sony DW - D56A. I have tried two identical drives and also a Sony DW - Q58A but none of them seem to allow my laptop to boot up. I get a black screen and the message operating system not found . The laptop will boot up with the faulty drive and with the drive completely removed but not with a new drive. I tried leaving the original drive installed on the system and also with uninstalling the hardware thru the device manager but neither option makes any difference. Please help - the latest drive i bought is exactly the same as the faulty original and has been tested so i know it works - what do you think might be wrong? many thanks SJ

Somethings to try. With no dvd drive installed, when the laptop first starts up, is there a message to hit F2 to enter the BIOS setup. If the message doesn't appear, try hitting F2 when the Sony Vaio logo appears. If you are able to access the BIOS, check to see if there is a setting you have to change with regards to boot sequence. Maybe there is an option for selecting one boot device, the hard drive. If that doesn't work, try loading Default and Optimal Values. If it still doesn't work, is there software that you need to access in the Control Panel or the Start menu in Windows for changing the boot sequence. The above tips are based on Toshiba laptops but they all usually work the same way. If you still have your manual, it would help.
