Hello

I've been having this same problem, just leave the PC running all night when I come to see it in the morning either it locks up during the night or it's working like a charm and locks up during the morning.
The error is always the same "IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL", and it's always the same file "NDIS.SYS"
I've already tried changing my videocard drivers several times and always experience the same problem.

My System Specs:

CPU: P4 2.8 C (Hyperthreading Enabled)
Mobo: Asus P4C800 Deluxe
RAM: 2x512MB DDR 400 Kingston (KVR400X64C3/512, CAS Latency 3), running in Dual Channel
GFX Card: Asus V9560 Video Suite (NVidia Geforce FX 5600 w/ 128MB DDR)
Sound Card: SB Live! 5.1 Digital
HDD1: Seagate Barracuda SATA (ST3160023AS) through onboard Promise SATA Controller
HDD2: Seagate Barracuda IDE (ST380021A)
Optical Drive1: Asus DVD-ROM 16X ATA100 (e-616)
Optical Drive2: Sony CD-RW 52X/32X/52X (CRX-230A)
NIC1: National Semiconductor DP83815-Based PCI Fast Ethernet Adapter
NIC2: Onboard 3Com Gigabit LOM (3C940)
Internet Connetion: 3COM Cable Modem through NIC1
OS: Running Windows XP Pro With SP1a and Patches "KB826939" and "Q810400"

By the way, I've already had a simmilar problem with my P3 800, when I had it set-up where I have the P4, and now I seem to have it running stable, not sure how I did it but It's running with no problems.

Another thing, I've checked my System Information, and this is how the conflicts/sharing tab displays:

I/O Port 0x00000000-0x00000CF7 PCI bus
I/O Port 0x00000000-0x00000CF7 Direct memory access controller

IRQ 20 VIA OHCI Compliant IEEE 1394 Host Controller
IRQ 20 BtCap, WDM Video Capture

I/O Port 0x000003C0-0x000003DF Intel(R) 82875P Processor to AGP Controller - 2579
I/O Port 0x000003C0-0x000003DF StarStorm 53.03x NVIDIA GeForce FX 5600

IRQ 23 Intel(R) 82801EB USB2 Enhanced Host Controller - 24DD
IRQ 23 WinXP Promise SATA378 (tm) IDE Controller
IRQ 23 Creative SB Live! series

IRQ 16 StarStorm 53.03x NVIDIA GeForce FX 5600
IRQ 16 Intel(R) 82801EB USB Universal Host Controller - 24D2

IRQ 18 Intel(R) 82801EB USB Universal Host Controller - 24D7
IRQ 18 Intel(R) 82801EB Ultra ATA Storage Controllers

Memory Address 0xA0000-0xBFFFF PCI bus
Memory Address 0xA0000-0xBFFFF Intel(R) 82875P Processor to AGP Controller - 2579
Memory Address 0xA0000-0xBFFFF StarStorm 53.03x NVIDIA GeForce FX 5600

I/O Port 0x000003B0-0x000003BB Intel(R) 82875P Processor to AGP Controller - 2579
I/O Port 0x000003B0-0x000003BB StarStorm 53.03x NVIDIA GeForce FX 5600

So I suppose It's either the share between my Geforce FX and the USB Controller or the situation on IRQ 23, what do you guys think??

Fernando:

Go to CMOS and enable PnP (Plug & Play). See, if windows will assign correct IRQ's. This is a common problem now a days, because of the number of devices in a PC, especially USB's. Let me know, if you are successful.

Hi Fernando:

One more thing. You have so many devices, it ain't funny. I calculated the power you need to run these puppies, and the total is 413W of power. I hope you have 450W Power Supply. You are severely draining power....LOL. Let me know. If your Power Supply is less than 400-450W, consider changing it, or at least borrow one for testing that is 400W minimum. Also, see link below how to figure out the size of your POWER SUPPLY!!!

http://www.jscustompcs.com/power_supply/

Cheers,

Karel

Lol, actually I have Thermaltake Silent PurePower 480W PSU, so I think I'm ok for now, don't you think :P

Well, It's like this.

I've already tried the previous solution, and It doesn't work (thanks anyway).
What I've remembered is that I could manually assign IRQs to PCI slots/devices an thus the sharing problem would be solved (I currently have IRQs 2,5,7,11,12,14,15,17,21 free), the only problem is that I'm not able to find out how to do this on my P4C800 (allocation seems to be automatic, and I'm only able to reserve IRQs for legacy devices).

If anyone knows how to do this please post a message,

Many thanks

Fernando Pinto

First I have to say thank you to all of you, because these messages have helped me to solve this problem, with driver_irql_not_less_or_equal crash.

I went to device manager and selected the graphic driver (gforce2) and updated the graphics driver from there.
When you do this win xp automatically changes the irqs so that the graphic driver is separated from the other devices, in its own irq.

Hi guys , seems i have the same problem too , the error i get is either ndis.sys or stv680.sys which relate to my webcam driver and my nic card. When i check the irq the nic card and usb controller where my cam is plugged both have the same irq (and also my sound card). Can i change these without reinstalling windows and changing the bios to non pnp .Would appreciate any advise. Windows xp by the way >Cheers

Hi everyone,

Seems stupid, so many people with same error, not really finding solutions.; How about Bill Gates ..?

I tried to disable shadowing/cahcing in Bios, didn't help either, changed Ram,

I have a slight feelig it is due to my graph. card GeforceFx5200 and better cooling. I hve an Aopen Mobo, so no Asus..

Will try solving it and let you guys know.

Greetz

i have a geforce fx 5200 card also but the problem was happening before i installed this , ive now changed my nic card to one with a different irq and disabled the usb ports so everything running has a unique irq , lets see how long before the dreaded blue screen ......... fingers crossed

ok been haveing this same prob for over a month now...
i was running
p3 933
asus crvx4 MB
256 no name ram
gforce 32 mx vid card AGP
now
p3 933
asus cvrx4 MB
512 ram
256 gforce fx vidcard. PCI

well on christmas i upgraded my cd rw to a dvd rw ... no problems
then i added on the 12th of jan, 2 256 no name ram putting me at 640mb
and a Asylum 256 gforce fx vid card... been having problems ever since.. i finally figured out how to disable the auto restart on system error. and im getting the irql error
well since i have 3 ram slots i removed the 128 stick, didnt fix the problem...
updated vid and sound drivers.
it was strange norton systemworks would not install properly untill i removed the 128 ram..
i went through and changed from acpi to standard PC to assign diff IRQ's for all my slots..
still crashing.
at the place i buy my ram they test it before it leaves the store on a machine they have
im inclined to believe the ram is good.
could it be that the vid card is PCI?
this is driving me crazy i have reformated repartitioned the drives and reinstalled WIN XP Pro 9 times now in the last month and a half...
it just randomly crashes ... i could be clicking on a link or opening an mp3 it simply crashes.
...
now im getting LSA shell (export version) errors.

please help before MR PC meets with an untimely death at the hands of MR Smith & Wesson.

Hello Guys,
It has been now almost 2 months trying to fix the random boot problem. I get different error messages and the wicked windows blue screen,..
However, at microsoft knowlegde base there is a solution...not sure this will help everyone, but check out on
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;810093...duct=winxp
could help.

However i've tested my ram (1 x 333 ddr 512 mb - infineon- Aopen mobo P4 2.66 and geforce 5200) there seems nothing wrong with it, all brand new.
Lucky for me, at the office i borrowed 2 x 256mb apacer ddr 400 ram...i've swapped and tried it.

Up to now system holds, How do i test my system ? Installed demo of unreal tournament 2004 - great game btw, and let it run in spectate mode. It sure heats your trunk, but its easy...

And up to know, 30min. later...it holds...

Changing the ram did it...don't know how because ram was brand new, windows memtest did not show any problems, changed my infineon 1 x 512 ram ddr333 with Apacer 2 x 256 ddr400.
I've been playing unreal tournament now for 1h30..still holding so looks good so far.
Be strong !

I had been having this exact same crash from the moment I installed Windows XP on my new machine and getting all the latest drivers and updates.

After reading through all these replies I decided to download a simple memory tester from:

http://hcidesign.com/memtest.

I ran it and sure enough, not only did it BSOD during two of the tests, it also indicated I had bad RAM.

I had bought a 512 MB stick of DIMM PC2100 Kingston RAM and was surprised to find had problems since Id been told by the dealer that all the Kingston RAM is 100% tested before its shipped and that they had ytested it when the set up my new machine.

Since I'd just bought this machine, I called my dealer and explained the situation. I took it in and they tested the RAM and it was OK. They then swapped which slot it was in and that fixed it. The tech told me he had encountered this problem before and this solution usually worked.

I brought it home, loaded up Max Payne 2 Demo and it ran fine for 4 hours of continuous play. Woo-Hoo!

Thanks for everyone's suggestions and I hope this helps someone else out.

FYI, my specs:

Proc: AMD Athlon XP 2800+ (2083Mhz/333FSB/512K CPU)
MB: ASUS 7N8X-X 400 FSB
Video Card: GeForce FX5200 128M 8X DDR AGP TVO

I resolved a similar problem by downloading updated chipset drivers from intel. They have a utility for identifying your chipset and then for updating the driver. Go to the downloads section.
