Hi,
I just bought and installed a new A8N-SLi Deluxe mobo from ASUS and a NX7800GTX from MSI. I thus also re-installed Windows XP, only to find that now I have no "Standby" option anymore; I simply cannot put the PC into "Standby" mode. The option is there, but it's grayed out. Anyone know how to fix this?
Regards,
Oliver Hutterer

Have you loaded your video drivers yet ??

A couple of months ago... I built a new system for my wife... I distinctively remember that after new install of XP..... the standby button was grayed out.... after updating the system with the motherboards chipset drivers and all MS updates..... it was only when I installed my video drivers that the standby button was available. Also.... When I went to uninstalled and reinstalled different versions of video drivers.... the standby button was greyed out in between versions of video drivers... So for me.... the only time the standby button was available was when video drivers were loaded. Now this is for a ATI card... not sure if would apply with a Nvidia card.

I have installed all the latest drivers and it is still grayed out. I have checked my BIOS settings, and the ACPI suspend types S1 and A3 are both enabled and supported so it has to be a problem on the OS level. Any help?
Regards

EDIT... I don't have SP2 installed yet. Could this be a problem?

will it hibernate? (S3 + power options>enable hibernate)

.. if it wont hibernate either, i would check which HAL windows installed under.. if you dont have ACPI enabled when you install windows, you will never be able to enable S1/S3 , unless oyu change your HAL . (hardware abstraction layer) .. in other words re-install windows with ACPI enabled.. if it was enabled and you have a non acpi HAL layer installed then your motherboard is faulty and is not communicating with winXP setup

. Right-click the My Computer icon on your desktop, and then click Properties.
2. Click the Hardware tab.
3. Click Device Manager.
4. Click Devices by type on the View menu if this option is not enabled.
5. Double-click Computer to view which HAL is loaded.

it should read "ACPI Uniprocessor PC"

And so it does!
It says:

ACPI Uniprocessor PC

Device type: Computer
Manufacturer: (Standard computers)
Location: Unknown

then, under device status
it says that it is working correctly, and that if I have problems, I should try the Windows Troubleshooter... good joke!

Usuaslly you have to have the video drivers installed on your computer and you have to have SP2 intalled. When you reboot you computer, the Standby button should appear again.

you and i share the same problem, and i am almost sure what the problem is.
mine system is

PC CHIPS M955G mobo
Celeron D 2.93Ghz
1x 80 Western Digit SATA RAID 0

all trouble came from the SATA RAID 0,
only way to the end is buy a IDE hard drive for system install
or get a motherboard that supports SATA RAID 0/1,0/1.5 or better

Had the same problem, but FINALLY aced it. Hope it works for you.

Start, control panel, system, hardware, device manager, scroll down to DISPLAY , ADAPTERS and right clik, then left clik on UPDATE DRIVER. Bingo I got it, (standby) hope you do to. Also when shutting down at night you can do this, start turn off and when Standby, turn off and restart comes up hold down your shift key and now you can have it two ways with HIBERNATE also.

After recently rebuilding my wife's laptop I encountered similar problem (greyed out standby button) and thanks to the very useful tips I got on this forum I got it working.
In my case it was simply the video drivers that I had to reinstall, the re-install CD wouldn't help I sourced the driver from Dell website. Simply and straight forward, thanks to the right pointers on the forum. Keep up the good work
