Hey guys, I just got a computer off a friend. It is a laptop and it has a 3.06ghz P4, but when I run cpu-z, it says its only running at 1.86 ghz. Now, I have read that these things dont run as fast if you are not stressing it to save battery life...Is that true? or do I have a faulty processor. I read in one forum here that one guy said its true, but I would like to have some more opinions.

Thanks,
-Will

Try running something to max out the CPU (like a 720p video) and then check the speed.

1.86 seems a little too high to be in saver mode, but it may be like semi-save mode... you know, 1/2 of its power saving potential.

It also may be running to hot, and clocking back to reduce heat.

It you cannot get it to increase, check the temps.

Was this when you were running it off battery or off A/C power? If you were using the battery power than it is normal for it to slow down the clock speed to save battery life. Plug it into the wall outlet and see if it speeds up to 3.06. Also there might be a program/application that controls the laptop for power save mode or performance mode.

it's intel speed stepping feature, the feature can ususally be enabled and disabled in the bios.
speed stepping dumies down the cpu according to utilization.
meaning, no use no power, mo use mo power. :)
really helps to preserve energy if you are unpluged but can be a pain if you are pluged up because it takes a second or two for it to respond to load.
i don't think their is anything wrong with your cpu.

it is normal... I have a HP NC6220 laptop with a Pentium M 750 1.8Ghz... when on A/C pwr it is running at full speed... when I am on batteries it drops down to 782Mhz or somewhere around there.

well if your saying this is a P4 Mobility CPU, it Probably has Speedstep technology which throttles down the CPU when its not doing heavy tasks, such as Email and Solitair, or it maybe getting too hot.

Ok guys, got that all worked out. Now I need to know where to get the latest ati mobility 9000 drivers. I cant find them on the ATI website. I am probably being stupid, but I still can't find them. Does anyone have a link where I can get em?

Thanks,
-Will

if it is an oem system then you should be able to get them on their website
example: if it is a dell, look on the Dell website
or

Yeah, but they are from 2004, so they really are not updated...Does ATI not create new drivers for their mobility cards before 9600?

Willy,

There is a mobility section at ATI website.... start with Drivers & Software at the top of the webpage on the right half. Then choose Windows XP...... then look at the left hand panel and you will see Mobility for notebooks towards the bottom..... It may apply to you... there is a small file that you download and this file checks your system if their drivers will work for your laptop .... otherwise you will have to use whatever is the latest support from your laptop manufacture.

Yeah, unfortunately those drivers only support 9600 and up... :(

I guess I am going to have to deal with not being able to play oblivion on my laptop :( lol

I have researched this a little for my laptop... and there is a way to update your drivers, but it is long and tedious. It involves getting the new drivers, then using another program to modify your current drivers... etc...

Didn't look fun.
