Do you enable v-sync in ES4: Oblivion? On my SLI rig, v-sync seems to kill performance.

any game Vsync Kills performance, you have to set your Monitor refresh rate higher, major advantage is that Vsync prevents graphical tearing.

not in Vice city or GTA SAF.If you have a FX5900 or higher you better have Vsync enabled or the game runs to fast and acts all crazy..lol

it will be the same thing with that, as i said you have to raise the Monitor Refresh Rate to get Good FPS.

vSync was hurting my performance, so I turned it off....Though the game REALLY slows down for me in the grass fields and anywhere where there is fog or mist...

My Vsync's always on. I've ran games with off (and Fraps on to check FPS) absolutley no difference!

....I'm back, but only as a part-timer... :)

In certain games if you turn vsync off then you get a line accross the center of the screen and the top and bottom lineup but not 100 percent exactly. I have noticed this more in NFSU2 more than any other game. And this bothers me because little visual flaws really bug me for some reason. So i turn vsync on whenever can, which is mostly in older games.

Vsync dosen't affect performence, all it does it sync the video output to you monitors vertical refreash rate. This may make a number like 100fps go down to say 60 or 85 but anyhting over your vertical refreash rate is NOT being showed by your monitor anyway. The only reason to turn off vsync is for benchmarking. Vsync should actually make the game look better because there will be no offset frames appearing.

edit* I run vsync on ES:4

vsync definitely affects my performance so for now i settle with 85Hz refresh rate and no v-sync, but i can't still see that dirty little tearing action.

I've noticed a few times while playing games, in certain movie scenes or just by jerking the mouse left and right too fast I'll see horizontal lines come across the screen like as if the image is being cut apart and it's trying to match itself back up again. Is this considered tearing?

Yes Mike. I have to settle with 85mhz refresh rate because my dumb monitor won't go any higher... Not that I could get over that many FPS in Oblivion though... :)

I actually have my monitor set to 85Hz too, so should I put it higher or something? Does this actually increase your FPS, because I remember awhile back when I was asking people if your refresh rate works in correlation to your FPS, everyone told me no.

It won't increase your FPS, a fast monitor refresh rate will just make the tearing less apparent. At 60Hz with no vsync, tearing is REAL bad.

Interesting.. so Vysnc is actually a good thing then, because I heard it was bad. I don't know, but that's one of the reasons why I don't agree with PC gaming. There's too many settings, combinations and/or little secrets you have to be aware of in order just to play a game unhindered from performance and quality just because of it.

Speaking of little secrets... Talk about tweaking Oblivion or Morrowind for PC...

GODDAMN/. You basically have to rewrite the whole .ini file.

I bet it must be a pain in the butt.

But no one has answered my question yet. I currently have my refresh rate set to 85Hz and I never play with Vsync on.. but should I? Should I also increase my refresh rate as well? Also, there's another thing I'd like to add. My desktop resolution is set to 1024x768 and I usually play games at that resolution as well, but sometimes I'll play games at 1280x1024 and the window of the game will seem to shrink leaving an inch of empty black space around it. Stupidly I thought that my desktop resolution had to be same as the resolution I'm playing with, obviously it made no difference. I mean, isn't the game supposed to automatically stretch the screen out to proper proportions, yet it's like it stays shrunken. So I'm wondering what that has to do with..

** EDIT**

*** Think about it Mike. You had your pin cusion set, the horizontal, vertical, etc all set to suit for that specific Monitor Res. Now you've changed the resolution, and the settings you had on your monitor don't compliment the new resolution as the setting's either higher or lower... ****

That happens on my monitor, it happenps to everyone's. Just gotta manually reset the horizontal and vertical, etc. Pain in the arse i know!

Actually I had terrible tearing in DOOM 3. It just sort of appeared one day. So i complained to BFG and they said my card might be knackerd. So guys ALL YOUR CARDS ARE KNACKERED! Hahaha!

I just realised it was tearing, and i mighta made the email to BFG a wee bit too drastic.
I was running DOOM3 on Ultra Settings at 1600x1200 @ 60Hz doh! So all i done was turn VSYNC on, and change my refreshrate up to 75 and it's playing sweet. But at the time, even running DOOM 3 on 800x600 it was still tearing WTF? Tearing sucks and should not happen at all for todays cards, machines, monitors, etc!

I've spent nearly 2000 on building my pc, and sometimes i think the fookin xbox 360 performs better!

(All i mean the frame rate seems super fast, no tearing, etc)

PS: Any letter N missig from my text is missing, it's my fooking keyboard at work! It's fcukd!

I use v-sync on CounterStrike Source, because the tearing is pretty bad. It never, ever, gets below the 60FPS mark, which is the freq. of my monitor.
I also use it in FEAR as well.
