Well, I've had this computer for almost a year and a half, with no problems. And suddenly, when I tried to log on, this error came up. I don't know too much about computers, and I can't even get onto log on. I tried looking for the windows xp disk, but I can not find, it there any other ways to get into the computer to do a system restore without having to clear out the memory or anything? Sorry, but I really don't know what I am talking about. I tried to look at other topics like this, but I don't know what they are trying to say, I don't know if I need a new computer or not...Thanks for the help.

Hi, it seems like We may be having the same problem.
What error message pops up when you try to Log on?

I am getting this message twice:

"The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000005). Click on OK to terminate the application"

Matt,

Try booting your computer and repeatedly push the “F8” key after boot. If you see the Windows XP boot logo you’ve gone past the option. Upon pushing F8 at the right moment your computer will go to a boot options screen. From there try using your “Last Known Good Configuration” to see if you can bypass the problem.

IF you can, post what the error message says.

Try going into safe mode and go to start>all programs>accessories>system tools>system restore. Choose a date which the computer worked fine last. IF this doesnt solve the problem, we can continue to try and help you out with you not buying a new computer.

I too have this issue. I have tried everything I know of to no avail. My drive too is a new 250 mb WD, and had recently imaged it with casper from an older drive that was running out of room. It did start acting up recently and upon reboot I was presented with the exact error..
"A disk error has occurred
Press Ctrl-Alt-Del"
And that is all it does now. I thought the MBR might be at fault but it isn't. I then thought the boot sector was the issue - it wasn't. I thought the files might be corrupt but they aren't. I also thought the boot config was bad but it isn't. SO last thing is to see if I can re-install windows over the old one. XP pro. If it works I will try to remember to post a solution.

I am having a similar problem. I tried to read a dvd on my laptop and had a failure in windows explorer. I then rebooted my computer and got the infamous "The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000005)" for services.exe and lsass.exe. It happens twice for each one, then the computer just sits there and will not continue to boot. I tried booting in safe mode and last good configuration but no luck. I do not think it is virus related as I was not even connected to the internet when the problem occured. The only event that seemed to trigger the problem was an error trying to read a DVD in windows explorer.

Configuration: Dell Pentium Centrino running Win XP Pro, SP2 with all updates complete.

If anybody out there can help with this one it would be greatly appreciated by all of us who are experiencing this same problem.
