(I hope I'm not duplicating a question. I looked in the archives, but could not find a solution.)
I am using dos to install my win xp.
(Yea, I know, it should be able to be installed directly off the cd without dos, but it has not worked for me. So, I'm using dos. So, if anyone could help me with just this dos-process, I would be very grateful.)
Here's what I've done step-by-step:
1) get a win98 bootdisk.. put smartdrv.exe on it
2) put the disk in the floppy drive
3) startup computer
4) FDISK the hard drive
So, now, I'm at "format the drive." After initiating the format command, I get this message:
"required parameter missing -"

eh, mate try this if your first operating system is lower than Win Nt os
and you put win98 os then your harddrive and hardware are not compatible with Winxp os
WinXp uses a higher processing software and hardware to process data though if your processor is up to date at least Pentuim4 or Pentuim3 your hardware needs to be updated and congiured with both processor and Winxp os to insure a complete usage of data.
Rember os's are used to insure faster processing of data and the ability to handle loads of data simultaneously. Thats why some comps are slow os's cant process all the tasks and data at one time. Higher processor doesnt mean anything, however plays a important part in data transfers, if the os cant reckonize the processor than your screwed. If the os cant handle the processor cause the processor utilizes higher transfer of data and the os is not at that same level then thats your problem.
You can install by dos but your sytem needs to be update and all working in union.
i dont recomend dos to install but its up to you. Also the dos needs to be very close to Winxp's dos. Or it wont happen. If you do it the other way try my suggestion at first. Though my suggestion at top refers if you are either installing WINXP by Floppy or cd in some cases or by using dos to install it
