Spent about 45 minutes on phone to Sony help line to no avail. Reinstalled mouse software, utility library, restored computer to 2 different earlier dates and nothing worked. Now they are saying i need to reinstall system (which means the pain of getting all my files off my computer and wiping it clean so they can rule out that it's not a software problem).

Somehow my touchpad has become disabled. Does anyone have any possible solutions to re-enabling it? I'm sure it's just the case of accidentally disabling it???

Would appreciate anyone's advice on this one.

i never new you could disable touchpad's on a software level...have you bumped it really hard or something along those lines that may have disconnected it

No bumps, knocks or spills on the machine. Was working perfectly fine this morning, then when I went back to use it, no mouse appeared. Tried restarting a few times, would see the cursor in the middle of the screen but unable to use touchpad. Then plugged mouse in US port and it worked.

Only reason why I suspect it's something simple is that in the trouble shooting section of the Vaio User Guide, they say "You may have disabled the touch pad without connecting a mouse to the computer." When I go the the section they refer to under "Using the Touch Pad", there is no reference to this at all...

>> SONY SERVICE IS DISHONEST
the SZ series is notrious for having a crappy trackpad - I struggled with mine for years - sent it back to Sony and they said that I needed a new motherboard.

Yeah, right... to fix the track pad.

Well I saved the $699 - and did the black tape fix, and smooth sailing since.

I am hitting all the forums Sony, so hope you read this. This is the only recourse I have for you having tried to jack me for 700 dollars.

This computer is finally operating properly after years. I so wish I had done this earlier. You made me reinstall my system software, all of my software, send the computer in for days - costing me days of downtime - and then refuse to fix a computer that is under warranty -

You tell me that you need to replace the heat sink, mohterboard, fan, and charge me more than the unit is worth to fix your faulty hardware.

Good times.

I stole this directly from a Yahoo answer for this problem. Credit goes to Piyush Garyali

Go to C:\Program Files\Sony\Setting Utility Series and run VCCPointingDevice.exe. Untick the “Enable” checkbox and voila – this would disable the touchpad. You could create a shortcut to the file above for easy access!

To get to the executable without a mouse, press {Windows-Key]-E, then use the tab key and the arrow key to navigate through Windows Explorer. Just highlight the file and click {Enter} to launch it.

To enable the touchpad you need to run the same executable and tick the “Enable” checkbox. You need to have an external mouse to move around and if you are a GNU-Linux freak, I guess you can make you way around without the mouse.

This worked when nothing else did!!!!

The Sony VGN and VGC series laptop have had problems. First one I came across was the wireless card wouldn't work. this one and several others have been linked to the Graphics chip. It seems the chips were defective and Sony didn't offer a recall. Only a bios update for the chip. This resulted in the laptop operating at a lower speed. Other manufacturers have the same problems with this generation of GPUs.

Replacing the motherboard is one way to take care of the problem. However, if it hasn't been reworked for this failure, you're wasting money
Just thought you should know.8)

This is how you disable/enable the touchpad
Click on:
All Programs
Vaio Control Center
Keyboard & Mouse
Pointing Device
click in the 'enable' box if you want the touchpad to work, unclick the 'enable' box if you don't want the touchpad to work.
I had so many problems with this laptop and the sensivity of the touchpad. When I typed ANYTHING the curser would jump all over the place and it was really frustrating me. I got a wireless mouse, but that didn't help as the touchpad was still working. I called Sony, I 'live chatted' with Sony and they did about 1/2 hours worth of remote work removing and reinstalling drivers and that didn't work, I took it to the Geek Squad, I asked the computer sales staff where I bought the laptop....and no one knew what to do. Finally, I figured it out by myself by just sitting at the laptop and playing with everything. I'm a woman in my 50's with no computer training whatsoever, I had an old 2003 desktop that barely worked and all I used it for was basically a typewriter . Then I bought this laptop in December of 2010 and I had to figure this out for myself. You would think that Sony would be able to say 'oh! all you have to do is disable the touchpad!' and then show me how. Nope. It was such a simple solution and no one could tell me what to do. I hope this helps everyone else that is frustrated by a very sensitive touchpad.

I have the VPCF1. I turned it off due to the sensitivity of the touchpad and could not turn it on using conventional windows mouse settings.

You have to use Sony Vaio Control Center per Sandra's instructions above. The core windows mouse settings did not work but the below worked great:

Start-->Control Panel-->Vaio Control Center-->Keyboard and Mouse-->Pointing Device-->Select Enable-->Click Apply-->Click Ok

I, too have been dealing with lazy/sensitive touchpad issues. I cannot seem to find what you all are talking about in regards to Vaio Control Center. I do find mouse/pointers in control panel, but it does not give me the same things as what you are talking about.
I NEVER had the ability to use the right side of the touchpad to drag down a page like all my other laptops in the past. Just learned to live with using the arrows. The machine is 2 years old.
Anyone????

Thank you Sandra for solving my problem. You saved me a lot of time and frustration. I also learned that on my laptop, Function-F1 turns the touchpad off and on and I must have accidentally disabled it.

This may sound daft but have you tried the function button FN at the same time as the F1 button?

While I'm here. Does anyone know how to re-enable the mousepad zoom function as well as the scroll function?

Reno.

I tried the FN and F1 button...nothing. Could it be that my laptop has no scroll device on the touchpad? I can find nothing in the help topics.

I have a Sony Vaio VPCEJ1Z1E/W. Touchpad suddenly stopped working. Tried everything.
The solution was SO EASY: Pressed Fn-F1 and Bingo! It works again. Did not realise that key combination toggles the touchpad on and off. Hope this helps somebody!!

I contacted the Vaio support through live chat. They asked me to press Fn + F1, and my touchpad enabled instantly. Great job!!

I had the same problem. Solved it by pressing Fn and F1 keys. Good luck! Mike
