I live 15 miles from the nearest wifi tower in my town, 8 miles as the crow flyes. The company that offers the wifi in my town also carries my cell phone.

In my yard i get 1-2 out of 5 bars on my cell phone, and halh the time inside my house i can get a signal.
It will cost me $100 usd for a guy to come out to my house and set up wi-fi, including the router. It is still $100 (usd) even if i cant get a signal.

I have looked on the internet for antanes and have found an interesting one that is made from a soup can, also i have seen some screw on, corded type antane that i can buy, to place outside of my house, to hopefully get a better signal.

So my questions are...
#1 how far can i be from the wi-fi tower?
#2 is a cell phone on the same band as wifi? (if i get reception on my phone will internet work?)
#3 Is there a particular router that i should get to recieve better reception?
#4 biggest of all questions. Is there a way to see if i get reception before i pay a guy to come out?
#5 what percent signal is about the lowest sttrenth i can have and still get reception.Does the signal strength limit my kbs download or upload?

1. Not very far, I think. Needs to be line-of-sight, probably < 1/4 mile.
2. Different bands.
3. I don't think so, could be wrong.
4. Friend with a laptop and wifi.
5. The lowest I can set my wireless router to is 17.5 dB. Or I could be wrong, might be 17.5%. Can't remember. I am pretty sure speed is affected by signal strength.

Thanks for the reply matt.
I had considered a laptop, but i figured that since they dont have external antane that there was no way possible that it could work at that distance.

Oh, you're talking about setting up a large external antenna? I don't know about those.

A family member who lives about a 1/4 mile away but it's not totally clear line of sight can detect our network but can't use it with his Powerbook. We had thought about setting up some sort of directional transmitter for him, but it was too much hassle.

Cell and WiFi operate quite differently.
Even at a quarter mile...wow.
You need to check in to the GSM offerings in your area if you want to use the "cell" network for your primary communications.
The entirety of the 802.11a/b/c/g spectrum of offerings can offer line of site communication in the 2.4 as well as the 24GHz range that extends its reach to 20+ miles.
There are several "metro" wireless networks that utilize a mix of these technologies, but some if not most will be out of the reach of most "user" markets....for now.
