Hi everyone, I'm currently using a 9600xt graphics cards and apparently, the latest games cannot be played smoothly. Therefore, I have decided to upgrade my graphics card. However, I'm not sure if I should buy a another good AGP card or change to a new motherboard which supports PCI-E.

Does anyone have a good card to recommend for playing games like FEAR?

And if I do change to a new motherboard, will my 2.4 ghz pentium 4 processor fit into the new motherboard? I have heard something about different pins, but I'm a pc noob and knows nothing about that. Is there any motherboard with PCI-E slot for my P4 processor with socket 478?

Can you all please provide some advice? Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thank you

Derrick

Pentium4 2.4 ghz
Radeon 9600xt
512 mb ram
MSI 648 Max (Intel Pentium 4 Socket 478)

wsell i upgraded from a radeon 9500 to a geforce 6800gs agp and i can nw play fear at a nice frame rate.
thing is you would need more ram, 512mb is not enough i would recomend 1 to 1.5 Gb of ram. in terms of the processor it may be good enough, my athlon xp 2500+ is still going strong.
so i would recomend either a 6800gs agp or a 7800gs agp and getting another 512mb of ram.

if u want to play games with reasonable frame rate's u should upgrade your whole PC.

u need more CPU power, (altough this can be reached by OCing)
u need more ram, 1gig minimum.
and u need a better vga card.

Stick with AGP or go to PCI-E? That depends on how far ahead of the game you wish to stay. :-)

If it was me, I would look for an AGP card.

Both the 7800GS and the 6800GS are really good AGP cards right now, and the 7800GS can keep up with basically any game right now. Just make sure you have at least 1GB ram for it, the newer games need that ram for steady FPS.

If you got the money right now, build a whole new rig. If you dont, upgrade Your video card Agp, and more ram. Ram is cheap plus you can get a good 7800 gs for about 299. That is what im sportin. Youll be able to play anygame with decent/resnable frames.

Dont get eVGa cause there having issues with there 7800gs and will take a whole month to get a new one in. Go Xfx or BFG on the 7800gs. <------Im shure a fanboy of eVga is gonna argue on this one. But they havent had to wait a month and deal with abunch of bs with the 7800gs from them. Besides that eVga is good.

About my spelling, If you say anything about it im gonna hunt your nerdy english aniel retentive arrrssse down and beat the elcrapo right out of you!!!!

Is the 7800GS much inferior compared to the PCI-E cards?

It is slower then the 7800 gt pci version. I dont think its cause its pci, i think its just an inferior card. It has less pipes or something techniqual etc. The Agp and Pci are match for match up till the 7800s.

Here are some liinks for some time demo benchies. They used to be on the very right, but there not opening for me =(.

hey man how are ya, Do you know what kind of memory you have right now in your pc? You want to match the type and speed you have so you can run dual channel if your motherboard supports it. Also when you go to upgrade to a better setup, buy a 2 gig memory kit, try and get low timings. You will not regret this when it comes to gaming.
