Hi

Up until yesterday I had the free version of ZA which I've been using for a very long time with no troubles at all.. I've just bought and installed ZA Internet Security Suite and noticed straight away that my PC is generally slower and sluggish with everything it does.. From browsing, to typing .. Everything seems to be lagging.. Is ZA ISS the cause of this? I have quite a lot of it's features turned on such as, Anti Spyware and anti Virus turned on. Not only have I noticed a hit on XP's performance, but also sometimes when I open ZA's window from the tray icon, it will grind the PC to a halt and not let me do anything... Tabbed programs start flashing orange and ZoneAlarms control window will be just a white box.

Can anyone suggest a way around this? I've disabled the Ani Virus and Spyware checkers..This seem better but it's still not right.

Thanks for any help

Jon

What's your system specs?

Also have you done ALL of the following?

Anti-Virus Check
Anti-Spyware Check
Registry Cleaning
Defrag

My system has a 3.2GHz CPU with 1GB Ram and other mid to high end hardware...

My PC is totally clean and regularly defragged with Diskeeper.. Before installing ZA security suite, my PC was fine. I had AVG Free for virus checking and Ad-Aware for spyware.. I figured since I had ZA free version, why not intergrate Virus and soyware checking with the full ZoneAlarm Internet Security suite.. I was so sure about it I didn't even download the trial and just bought it straight away.. A mistake I think.

Oh, and I did make sure to uninstall AVG before installing ZA ISS.

Thanks for the reply

Jon

The free edition you had was the basic firewall and not security suite. Thus ran no problem. Security suite incorporates a lot more. It will have an impact on some systems, especially at start up. If you were happy with the way Zone Alarm ran you coulda stuck with it and upgraded to the basic edition which is not resource hog.
Have you tweaked any settings on ZA? Tweaking some settings can have an effect on your system.

Tam...

*** By the way, ZA Security Suite's excellent. You can turn of the incorporated AV software, etc. I run mine with my AVG and both work in harmony. I've had no problems. ZA finds other viruses that maybe AVG wouldn't and vice versa. In fact, using AV software can be a resource hog for any computer. You got yourself a good deal buying ZA SS its a good piece of kit. Take time to understand how it works and you'll soon have it running sweet!

....I'm back, but only as a part-timer... :)

Did you get AVG uninstalled ok?

I haven't tried the ZA suite, after using Norton's NIS suite I wanted to move away from the one program does all thingy, so I'm running NOD32 & ZA Pro on two PC's & it's sweet.

I did find on one PC where I was running Diskeeper 10 Premier I had to disable the schedualed defrags because it conflicted with other programs. So I run defrag manually now on all PC's, you may simply have to many programs trying to do to much.

But the NOD32 & ZA Pro combination works great, low memory usage & fewer starting processes. Keep in mind I disable numerous features on both programs as their not needed.

Thanks guys, got some good info here..

I knew ZA Security Suite would take up more resources, but not to the the extent I experienced.. The one thing I have stopped is the Anti-Spyware checker...My system is pretty much spot on now (fingers crossed). One thing that I have done is disable Diskeeper's scheduled defrags (thanks Brian)..Maybe that had kicked in at the wrong time (twice?)...

And Tam, thanks for pointing out AVG works ok with ZA.. I like the idea of 2 virus checkers on guard.. Although maybe not such a good idea with ZAISS.. I might just stick with one main Virus checker on my PC and use Trend Micro's online virus checker.

Edit: I uninstalled AVG first thing..No problems.

Thanks again
Jon

I had another extremely laggy experience just now.. I was using a java web based aplet to upload some files...

Has anyone had any slowdowns at all when using Java with ZA Security Suite? I've turned off the AV guard which has helped.. Maybe ZA was checking every file being uploaded with the Java plugin? I'm starting to regret buying this software now..Everyone raves about it, but it doesn't seem to get along with my setup... I had the free version of ZA and AVG before and they worked fine. I've just paid $49 for ZA ISS, two of it's main features are now turned off... What a waste.

I can't even find an e-mail address for ZA to ask them about these performance issues.

I thought the AV monitoring feature in ZA was sort of stupid myself, if my AV vendor can't provide me with program updates to prevent it from being hijacked maybe I shouldn't be using it.....my thinking anyway.

Java apps can be very resource hungry, it's just the nature of the beast, some work great others not so great.
That's why I stopped using Azureus, it's Java implamentation sucked resources badly on my PC's.

But that's the thing.. The main java aplet I use, I've been using for months (with free ZA) it worked fine.. It's just a simple file uploader for an online storage site.. Now with ZA Security Suite, it just chugs the PC down to an eventual freeze....

I've just come across a problem with MSN in that it now takes about a minute to start sending o receiving a file... I have solved this by looking in the SmartDefense options and unchecking authentication... I tried this with the two java aplets listed but that doesn't change anything.

Nope, I've had it with this damn thing... It's slows everything down and it gets worse the longer the PC is on..I've uninstalled ZA ISS and my system runs fine.. This thing kills everything.. Music programs, video programs, surfing take AGES to load.. I'm typing here and I'm about 3 words ahead of what is on screen!

Is it possible to 'down grade' to Zone Alarm free version? I'm getting onto their tech support to demand a refund.

Thanks for the help

Jon
