I just bought my dad a new LCD for his birthday. Its a Samnsung SyncMaster 931B. I cannot get the dvi to work on it. I plug the cable into the monitor and the video card but it just keeps searching through the Analog and Digital channels to see if it can find anything. If I plug in the VGA cable, everything works fine. How can I fix this? I have already installed the drivers for the monitor and still no luck. Any ideas? Thanks

You using the correct sort of DVI cable? There are a couple of different types-if I recall correctly, you need to use a certain type (DVI-I, I believe) to conect up a higher res TFT.

I dont know Dublin. I have never treid it. And no offense or anything, but I dont want to lug one of the upstair's LCD monitors downstairs. To much hassel.

Is there a possibility that the DVI port on the video card is bad? If so, couldnt that affect the VGA port on it too?

Is there a "source" button with is usually marked A/B? On some Samsung models you can plug two computers; one through VGA and the other through DVI. You press the A/B to flip between DVI or VGA

I believe so. But when the DVI is plugged into the monitor and the computer, it just sits there searching through the Analog and Digital channels to see what one is connected. In the process, it does not detect either one. The screen goes black and the monitor button just flashes.

If I plug in the VGA cable, it detects it right away.

Wild goose chase... 3 possibilities
1. bad cable - test with another cable
2. bad monitor - test with another monitor
3. bad vid-card - test with another vid-card or PC

Only way to tell is to test it. Don't be lazy dude. :)

1. Tested with my own dvi cable and it didnt work
2. I doubt its the monitor because of the fact that the VGA still works with it
3. If worse comes to worse, I will see what I can do about using a different video card.

Can it be something in the video driver software? I do not have a VGA and DVI output on my video card but there something in the software that delegate which video output to chose from?

I doubt it. All computers are running on the same nVidia video driver and I am not having any problems with DVI on my computer.

>> Re: DVI
If your vid card came with a DVI-I to 15pin adapter, that might be able to tell you whether it's the cable or one of the ports. For example, you could plug one adapter into the 15pin port of the display, and plug the other end of the DVI cable into the DVI port of the vid card. You could then plug the DVI cable directly into the display, and use the adapter to plug the DVI cable into the 15pin port of the vid card.

That won't test every aspect of the DVI port, but it at can let you know if something major is going on.

Well I just tried my monitor using DVI and it still dindt work. So it must be the DVI port on the video card. Im going to assume this is it unless there are other suggestions.

>> Re: DVI
Even if the driver wasn't set to display in digital, it would still send analog through the DVI cable, so that isn't the problem.

Try hooking that monitor to your other PC and your other DVI cable. If that doesn't work, then your monitor or at least that DVI port on your monitor isn't working. If that works, then try the new DVI cable. If that doesn't work, then it's the cable. If that works too, it's your video card. You could try both DVI ports on the card, (if you haven't... since I've forgot if you said that already), and see if only one port is bad.

Well I just tried my monitor using DVI and it still dindt work.

Could you be more specific as to which monitor, which DVI cable, and which DVI port?

You could definitely rule out any possibility of it being a driver problem by booting into safe mode. If it displays in safe mode, it's a driver problem. If it doesn't, then it's something else, or there is at least another part to the problem.

Did your card come with a VGA adapter (DVI to VGA)? If so, use the DVI cable to plug into your monitor's VGA port from your video card's DVI port. If that works, it's the DVI port on your monitor that is bad.

I used my Samsung SyncMaster 930B monitor with my current DVI cable that I am currently using as I type this and its in the only DVI port on the monitor and video card.

Forgot to mention, I do not remember if the video card came with one, but I believe I got one with my 6800GS. Ill have to check. If I do, I will try that. I will also try booting into safe mode and seeing if that works. (but I doubt it)

Safe mode was a no go too. I figured it would be as I could not see what I was doing.
