I've always liked small computers, I got a Psion II, then the Series3, and later Series5.
When the Libretto 110CT came out I got one, although it was finally retired when the Battery eventually failed and replacement was prohibitively expensive, also it was a bit light on processing and RAM as Apps got ever more bloated.

In Dec 05 I bought a U100 when they were released in local market, I loved it.
In April 06 My overnight bag containing the U100 was stolen, shortly afterwards I bought another U100 after using a full size laptop for a while and deciding to go small again.

The 2 main criticisms often raised about the U100 are Keyboard too small for fast accurate typing and Screen too small for office docs. They are both valid, but in part they miss the point.

At Home Base, where I do most of my work, generate most of my Docs and Acad DWG's and review most of the stuff that is sent to me my U100 sits hooked up to the mains, with a 17" TFT Monitor and a USB hub plugged in, off the hub is a full size keyboard, Optical Mouse, Printer, Archive drives etc. The Monitor is configured 1280x1024 and as soon as it is plugged in the Video driver switches to this resolution.
In this set-up the U100 is basically acting as the 'Crate' of a Desktop PC. With the RAM upgraded to 1Gb it copes well with MS Office Apps and AutoCad.

On the move the U100 fits nicely in a small shoulder bag not much bigger than it'self, with a couple of accessory pockets that hold a miniature (Targus) USB optical mouse, Iomega USB Drive or USB FDD as needed + other junk like PCICMA multi memory card reader, VGA output adaptor, 4way USB hub (can't remember when I last needed to use that, 2 outputs on the U100 always seem to be enough on the move).

Now I have everything from my desktop with me in a package that I can hold in one hand, without having to Sync or crossload, all my Doc's, Dwg's, Pdf's and Jpg's, 60Gb of HDD means I can carry a lot of Content around.

As soon as it boots without a Monitor the Video configures to 1280x768, crisp and bright. If I find myself struggling to see the detail I can press Function+Space and cycle through 1280x768, 1024x768 and 800x600, also in the Video/Screen properties the Font size can be switched from 96dpi to 120dpi to make text more readable.

If I'm just out On-Site during the day the battery usually gives plenty of use, and the power management can be set to low consumption if extended use is anticipated without much loss of performance. On longer trips the mains adaptor and DVD drive go in my overnight bag (along with a few movies).

The installed Config Free software combined with the WiFi and Lan socket have coped well with every connection scenario I have encountered and generally getting On-Line has been hassle free, web browsing and e-mail in a paperback size package.

It is a niche machine, not for everyone, there are trade-offs between size, performance, usability and price, but it works well for me.

Cheers,
Nige.
