I think it is about time that gaming companies make all games 64-bit & through them on a nice 4.7GB DVD with the 32-Bit version, so that your system would deside which one to install.

This is rediculis that it is taking so long for 64-Bit games to come out. I want to go to a Walmart or something & pick up say Half-Life 64-bit or something?

These gaming developers need to take there head out of there ass & start producing ASAP or else ;)
Take Care,

Give it 5 years. ;)

I've seen about three games that use all but 50 MB of a DVD+R and both the Act of War games are greater than 5 GiB (DVD+R DL). So no, there isn't room for two versions. Nor do near enough people use 64-bit computers to warrant doing so. Be grateful there are that many available.

WTF? 5 years LOL, you got to be kidding Bro? Why so long? And how much more money would it costs for them to release both versions on one DVD? I mean, it is not only AMD running 64-Bit CPU's it is also Intel.

And Microsoft Windows XP x64 is out for a wile now, and they are releasing Vista x64 too, which I am now currently using as my prime OS ;)

Really they need to be working harder to get these titles out ASAP in 64-bit format

Well, how about DVD-9 which holds about double what DVD-5 holds? You know, the Dual Layer DVD? And hey, HD-DVD are also coming. Is it possible that we will be seeing HD- 64-bit games too?

Agree'd.

If I owned my own gaming development company, I would have one division which will ONLY innovate & bring out what the others have failed to do. And that is a few raw 64-bit titles. This move should be curiosity enough for people to buy IMO, and the R & D wouldn't be all that bad.

And to add, companies like DELL, HP, Voodo etc. would have an 64-Bit advertizing attraction, which can move system out the door, because of the unique'ness of the 64-Bit gaming titles & systems.

Hire Me ;)

The reason there arent many 64-bit games is that it doesn't really do much for games - unless there are silly add-ons that are artificially made x64 only, a la Far Cry.

It looks better because they only made the enhancements to the 64-bit version. There is zero reason that they couldn't have done the exact same thing for the 32-bit version.

Forget the conversion to 64-bit... When will games turn to being optimized for Dual-Core and soon to be Quad-Core?!

I don't even think 64-bit applications make that much of a difference anyway.

No, 5 years is a conservative estimate. As I said in another thread, it'll most likely happen with the next OS after Vista (about 5 years). This is so long because most of the market is not ready for it. Once about 70% or greater computers sold are 64-bit compatible, then the shift will pick up pace. That's what Vista is likely to achieve. Right now, only enthusiasts really use 64-bit compatible operating systems. Most of the main stream manufacturers don't even offer x64 Edition as an option.

It would cost about 1/4 more per unit for an extra disk or more time to stamp the extra layer which means their bottom line shrinks for something no one would really ever use.

You are one of millions--in the minority. There is no money in 64-bit versions of software and nothing lacking in 32-bit forcing them to 64-bit. 64-bit will only catch on when most everyday computers are capable of running 64-bit software. This will happen with time.

DVD9 is aka DVD+/-R DL. The 9 comes from rounding the capacity, 8.5 GB. The same is true for DVD5 but with a capacity of 4.7 GB and not dual/double layer.

Games on HD-DVD won't be around for a while until they catch on and/or need the additional storage capacity. I have yet to see a single game take more than one DVD+/-R DL disk so it might be a year or two off before it is necessary (enough time for HD-DVD to mature and grow in popularity).

You wouldn't be in business for long. Technology doesn't make a game great, gameplay does.

'Tis true. Games rely heavily on 32-bit floating point operations and to a lesser degree, 32-bit integers. There's nothing at this time that requires doubles (64-bit floats) and quads (64-bit integers).

I don't even think 64-bit applications make that much of a difference anyway.

Strategy games can put multi-core technology to superb use but FPS and TPS shooters really can't. I think a move towards multi-core development will be faster than to 64-bit because it's backwards compatible and relatively easy, especially on the .NET Framework.

64-bit can make a huge difference if the application needs to use huge numbers. For instance, a 32-bit signed integer can only hold -2,147,483,648 through 2,147,483,647 while a 64-bit signed integer can hold 9,223,372,036,854,775,808 through 9,223,372,036,854,775,807. As you can easily tell, there really isn't much that needs numbers that massive--yet.

Well, I've played & finished FarCry & FarCry 64. Both looked amazing.
The FPS were not so much different, just the gaming details shined a little more on the 64-Bit version. There were more things on screen at one time in the 64-Bit version.

Anyway, I still think they should be working on 64-Bitness in a faster pase. IMO, 32-Bit has been excasted for a wile now. Current 32-Bit games are lacking & just all look the same & play the same.

They look the same because 64-bit integers/floating point decimals don't effect graphic rendering. They don't play any different because games don't have any use for numbers that large/precise. 64-bit has the most significant advantage for hard drive and memory addressing by taking only one clock instead of two. Otherwise, it's only good for special applications that require those large/precise numbers.

Hmm I believe 64-bit gives more detail to the game and uses full dual core power? Anyway, I like Super Xp's idea, it's time that all games should come on DVD's. I mean come on if someone doesn't have a dvd drive on his computer these days, they probably won't have a Pc powerfull enough to run the game.

It has been 3 years now, how much 64-Bit game have we seen so far? An old interview, but a good one at that. After reading it, 64-bit gaming is really possible, and will make a differents in graphics & speed because, your 64-bit CPU will be able to address a lot more memory/info at a given time.
