Upon removal of the CPU cooler we turn on the computer system and start the stopwatch, then we observe how far the computer makes it into the Windows bootup process. Anything beyond the ‘Windows XP startup logo’, usually a few seconds in, is already a tad too far, you’re simply not trying hard enough.


That's not true. I had an uncooled 1.8 GHz Celeron that made it to the Windows XP "Welcome Screen." I first took notice of something wrong when the fade from black to the "Welcome Screen" ran at slideshow FPS. Then I looked over, and noticed the bare metal of the CPU's heatspreader.

Well, you weren't overclocked, were you?
Extra voltage helps as well. If you have a laptop, dribbling on the keyboard is especially potent.
