Just wondering if there is a way so I can get my ping down in games because I have like 60 on Quake 2 and I really need about 40 to do well against people with 40 and under... anyway to do it???

You could use cable-nut and configure your connection to be at top shape. http://www.cablenut.com

But in my years of playing online (mostly CS) My ping always has been from 65 to 90 and I play with ppl who have 20 to 30 ping, and I don't notice any difference. You can still own someone who much lower ping than you.

Ya but Quake 2 is a different game, you'd have to play to understand what I mean.

no servers giving you lower ping?

You could try purchasing a better router or NIC, whether it will really help all that much is debatable. But you could get a very good d-link NIC for about $50

I take it you're using the built in NF4 NIC on the mobo? Is ther a Marvell yukon one also, or just the nvidia one? I've always found the nvidia ones to be rubbish

there's a new NIC called the Killer that sports onboard memory and a processor enabling the NIC to process all of the network traffic taking the load off the rest of your system allegedly drasticly lowering ping times and raising in game frames.

Maximum PC reviewed this NIC and said it did work but the difference was so small it wasnt worth the 200 dollar price tag.

but countering Maximum PCs review most consumer reviews i have read said this card lowered latency a substantial ammount and praised this product

so the review of the Killer is a mixed bag, do some research on it

other than different hardware try a different ISP - i have read over the years that DSL (ADSL) isnt as good for gaming due to the fact that DSL is asynchronous meaning the download speed may be say 3Mb/s but the upload is much lower somwhere around 184Kb/s - whereas cable internet although i dont know the numbers has a better upload rate thus lowering latency, there's also somthing to do with the packet size of DSL vs. Cable connections too but i dont know the details, moral of the story is Cable is "better" for gaming.

if all else fails stop playing a soon to be 10 year old fps :P j/k

I'm pretty certain those guys that posted such comments are on the payroll.

It only worked some of the time in the review, and even then, not to a great extent.

TBH, your onboard NIC is pretty much just as good.
