Hey everyone I'm close to chucking the damn thing out fo the window! You gotta hellp! I've got an Inspiron 2200, about eighteen months old, and for the last few months the screenr andomly darkens. it's all still on, if I squint I can still see it, and everything still works (if I could see to click the mouse!) but it's dark dark dark. if I shut the laptop and open it again, it comes back on. Sometimes it stays on for a while, and other times it just pings off again pretty quickly. It's driving me mad.

Also, be warned, I am not very good at this tech stuff so you'll have to help me by treating me like a total moron .... :) Anything anyone can suggest would be greatly appreciated!

Sounds as if you have a loose connection to the inverter card. One way to check this is to connect to a external monitor. If there is no problem viewing this way when the Lcd goes out, then it is most likely the connections to the inverter card. This card supplies the power to the backlight of the lcd. It will normally have two wires going into and out of it. Normally all that is required is to press the connectors so thay are seated properly. It doesn't require a lot of skills. Remove the lcd bezel, (the plastic part around the LCD frount. It will be located below the LCD. You may find the screws of the LCD bezel covered with a stickon covers. They are easly removed with a sharp thin blade of some sort. push the connectors together and reboot to see if this corrects the problem. If so, replace the bezel and screws and you're in business. If not, the unit will require inverter and/or cable replacement. Best done by a qualified techn.(That's so you'll have someone to blame if it doesn't work.)
