Hi all,

Heres my problem: i have a gericom ego notebook and its seems out of the blue my power supply was giving an intermittent output,so i bought a new one only this time when i plug in the laptop via mains i get 2 lights flashing at approx 2 second intervals no power on,have removed the battery and tried that but still the same,so i got another(know working AC adaptor) and the same result,is it possible that the DC Jack is broken or come away from the board any help/advice would be great.

Thanks

It unlikely that the AC adapter is the problem. Try removing the Hard drive, battery, Cd rom and any other items that are not required for power on. If you have more thatn one stick of memory, remove them one at a time. Apply power after removing each one. If the unit power up, you have the bad boy. It may be that something is just not seated properly. If so, you're in luck. If this fails, it may be time to replace the mother board.

Rod,
Out side of replacing with a known good LCD, I don't know of any other way. Those who are not laptop savy may over look is that Laptops cav toggle between the LCD only, LCD and externial monitor and Externial monitor only. this is usually done with a combination of the function key and one of the "F keys". If you are sure this isn't the case, the only way I know of is to replace the LCD and see. To test the inverter, The test LCD doesn't have to be an exact replacement. Most LCDs use the same backlight connector to connect to the inverter. You plug the test LCD into the inverter, and power up. If the backlight worked, you know that the backlight then needs to be replaced. Hope this helps.

Hi thanks agan for your swift reply,so are you saying that i can use a toshiba notebook lcd on say a packard bell notebook to see if the light works,if thats the case then wouldnt that prove that the inverter works too,or am i mistaken.

thanks again.

Yes, so long as the LCD is removed from the housing. You'll see that the LCD connector is the same or nearly the same. where it plugs into the inverter. Then yes you can use it to test the back light and inverter.

Just had another thought. No, it didn't hurt a bit! You may find that the two LCDs have the same connectors for the video as well. If they are in the same configuration, they may be direct replacement. You see, different manufactors have different part numbers. They work the same and will sub. As an example, I had a job where the LCD went out on a Toshiba M45. I replaced it with a display from an M3. the only difference was that the M45 has a gloss finish on the display while the M3 has a satin finish. Getting the picture?

>> Re: ongoing inverter/lcd screen prob
Hi laptop,

Ok well i tried your theory with an inverter from a spare toshiba satellte laptop i have here is the outcome:

problem laptop: sony vaio
problem: when the laptop is powered on i can see the sony logo ok the i get the safe mode options(laptop nt shutdown proper) when i select either option it runs a few seconds then the screen goes blank and stys that way,if i connect to ext mon all is fine from start till finish.
so i took the test inverter connected it to sony vaio still the same problem,i then connected the screen from the spare tosh and it lit the light up fo a few seconds then the light went of i guess thats normal as it was connect with one end of inverter from the sont adpink/white from the tosh,i tried it vice versa with same results,so i guess i know the light is working on the tsh and also the tosh inverter, still not sure now..

I think you may have misunderstood what I was getting at. In order to test the Sony inverter:
1) Remove the LCD bezel from both LCDs. You will see where both LCDs plug into the inverter.
2) unplug both LCDs from the inverters
3) Plug the "spare" LCD into the inverter of the Sony. This should tell you if the inverter of the Sony is working or not.

I don't suggest plugging the "spare" inverter into the Sony. There may be a difference in the voltage going to the inverter card on the input side.

As I said before, try toggling the settings of the video. It is usually a combination of function+F8. But some laptops may use other combinations. After all is checked, it may be time to get off the bucks and get a new lcd with inverter.
