Every time I go to load up steam, it just sits in the processes section of the task manager doing nothing. It doesn't gain any memory, and it takes up no processor space. Occassionaly (1 out of 10 times or so) it loads up after about 10 minutes, but other than that, it doesn't load (even after an hour).

When was the last time you rebooted?

Do you have another computer to test out the connection to the Steam servers? They may be having maintenance done on them.

I did a couple restarts this morning, and the steam servers are fine, I've accessed steam 3 times today. Now, its still taking about 5-8 tries to get in, and then, half the time CSS doesn't work. It seems to think that there are updates for CSS and my other games, so it says download paused. This is causing CSS to fail loading. Help?

Have you tried reinstalling Steam? Perchance your Steam installation has been corrupted.

As far as the "Download Paused" thing, right click the game's title in Steam, and click "Resume Updating."

If there are any updates for the games, Steam will download them accordingly. This will cause the game not to load. Once it is completed, should load with no problems. (That is assuming that the updates are whats keeping CSS from loading)

I emailed Valve about this, hopefully they'll get back to me soon. They usually do within a week.

This kind of thing is usually caused by an interruption in the update download which causes an error.

A possible fix for this problem is to navigate into your Steam folder and delete:

ClientRegistry.blob
Steam.dll
SteamUI.dll

Make sure your steam is closed during this and then when you open it, it should re update. It's only a possible fix and seems to only work for some people. It's worth a shot.

Same here -stopped working after an update on 9/1/07.

My support account at Steam also disappeared - now restored with no reason given.
I have removed every Steam related file and registry entry on my machine. Reinstalled a new version of Steam from the Steam site - installad OK but still will not launch. I'm seriously concerned that I'll never get my registration codes back.

I'm disgusted that this system was ever allowed to be implemented - they have taken my money and given me days of wasted time.

Tried deleting the files
ClientRegistry.blob
Steam.dll
SteamUI.dll
as recommended in a previous post although I had effectively done this by re-installing Steam. It does indeed cause an update to take place - however Steam will still not launch.

Have to have another beer to calm down :-)

Thank you very much for the suggestion but it doesn't work for me either. Any more ideas?

Tried all the latest Steam suggestions - which are mainly disabling all start up items and non MS services - (puts you at risk when you go online) - however Steam still does not work.

Stopping steam.exe via the task manager then removing the suggested files again causes the update to happen once more - that goes through and then once again it just hangs.

This is most frustrating - its not even possible to revert to 'old' steam software which worked!

I imagine it has something to do with the new Steam skin. The next update will probably destroy mine :-).

Success

I found that I had SpyCatcher installed - uninstalled that and it all works.:)
The Steam help site called this Spycatcher Express and gave a different scenerio for the effect it causes.

Tried one of the new skins and Steam restarted but promptly lost my login password so beware - however the link to recover a 'lost' password worked fine.

As far as I know SpyCatcher is a decent program so why does Steam not like it!

Now back to the game

Spycatcher was the problem for me too. Why that was the problem I don't know.

If you have good anti-virus program + firewall you shouldn't need "SpyCatcher". :|
