the laptop works fine, i know this because i can plug up a screen to the VGA on the back of the laptop and use an external screen.. The screen within the laptop does not work at all, never even flashes on.. is the screen dead or could it be a mother board problem? ide like to know for sure before i buy a new screen.. is there any way to find out?

Many folks that are new to laptops don't know that the laptop is designed to switch between the on board LCD display only, External monitor only, or both. This is done with holding down the function key and tapping one of the function keys. On many key boards, it's the F5 key. You may see a small drawing on the key that looks like an external monitor. If you have the operators books, look it up. Hope this helps.

i understand all of that except that the problem with the screen started well before i plugged it into an external monitor. We have plugged it into the monitor to see if it was still booting correctly or not. When it is unplugged from the external monitor the laptop display will still not turn on.. any ideas? cuz im stumped

Have you tried going into BIOS? Does it come up on the LCD? Check to see that it is set so that both the external and LCD will display. Look at the LCD really close to see if there is any display at all on the LCD. What I'm getting at, is to see if the backlight is bad.
Going through the process I outlined in the last post, helps narrow the search for the problem.
You may try reseating the cables to the LCD. Sometimes they work themselfs loose under normal use.
Trying to deside if it is the motherboard or the LCD is hard without an LCD replacement.

Hi,

I have had the same problem with my Presario 900, The machine works perfectly through an external monitor and though dated is still fairly good spec. so If you have found a solution to the problem I will be greatfull if you could let me know.

Thank you

Dan

This sounds like an image issue, i.e. the laptop is working, but the screen is not. From what you described, there are a few possibilities.

First, take a really close-up look at the screen, with light directly overhead, or a flashlight pointing at it. Do you see a faint image in the black? If so, then the screen is getting the video signal, but the backlight is out. It could be a problem with the inverter board (which powers the backlight), the inverter cable (goes from inverter to screen), or the backlight itself (a CCFL tube within the screen).

Usually, it's the inverter. It's pretty easy to replace if you search for instructions. My suggestion in getting the new part (usually in the tens of dollars) would be to start with:

Now, if you don't see an image no matter how close you stick the flashlight, then the problem is more likely to be the screen. It's also possible it's the video cable, but 9 times out of 10, it's the screen. Fortunately, this is also pretty easy to replace. A few minutes on Google brought me to this site, which offers brand-new laptop screens. For this case, you're looking at just under $400.

That site also has screen-replacement instructions, which helps.
