The hard drive on my laptop has begun spinning excessively lately. It wouldn't be a problem but its causing the batter on my laptop to die after only 20 min. I have tried putting in a new battery to see if that was the problem it and it didn't help. The hard drive continues to spin even when it is not doing any processes.

When was the last time you ran clean on your laptop? this will help remove temp files loaded by those fine folks on the internet that want to track your buying habits. Anyway, what it sounds like is that your laptop has run out of memory space and is using the hard drive as a memory location. This is normal and normally doesn't cause a problem. If you're running a lot of TSR(Terminate and Stay Resident) programs, this could be a factor. These will appear on the lower right on the bar at the bottom of the display next to the time. Check it out and try shutting them down and see if it improves. You might want to run defrag also to place hard drive files close together so it doesn't have to go all over the hard drive to load parts of the file at a time.
hope this helps,
