As as prelude to Vista I installed 64 bit XPpro on a cleam drive. Radidly learning that there are very few applications in 64 bit format and many 32 bit applications even with 64 bit drivers do always work. For example, I have Audigy Sound Blaster 2ZS Platinum and, using the 64 bit driver from Creative I can get sound, but none of the applications from my 32 bit CD function properly and Creative will not reply to my entreaties.

I recommended that you keep a 32 bit version of Windows, as a 2nd or 3rd OS if you are using a 64 bit version of Windows on another partition.

Yep! I have dual drives, "C" and "D" . Interesting that putting 32 bit on master "C" and 64 bit on slave "D" caused corruption of 'ntdlr' and neither drive would boot. Had to re-install 64 bit on master and 32 bit on slave to get the system to work properly - an oddity! Slave drive "D" in set as the default drive.

The is an aside. There are not many 64 bit applicatioins and I suspect the same is true for VIsta, both 32 bit and 64 bit versions. Indeed Noerton have just confirmed to me the Norton System Works 2006 is incompatible with Vista.

You have to install the newer OS first and oldest last. So XP x64 first, XP x86 last. Its like this if you are installing 2000 and XP. Oldest first, newest last.

Well for one, you do not need 64bit apps as most 32-bit apps will work just fine. The only 64-bit app that you will need is software firewall and an anti-virus. Thats about it. Then you need 64-bit drivers. Other than that, everything else should be fine.

And ditch Norton. Its a pile ofs**t. Get avast or something. Its free, supports x64 and is a LOT better than Norton.
