could not tolerate with the loud noise anymore, so opened the 4year old vaio frv26 to clean it. blew out tons of dirt from the cpu cooling fans and the heat sink slots. but when I put back everything, it just refused to start. when I press the power button, only the power lights on and nothing else happen.

the only problem i can think about is when i blow the dirt, the compressed air is so cold that sometimes it freeze the water in air on some part of the board.

is there any way to diagnose the problem? thanks alot.

Your best bet is to take it all apart and recheck all the cables are connected and that none are not connected or got disconnected when putting it back together again. And the cold air won't do anything to the laptop in any way.

Usually you forget to reconnect a able or one slips out when putting it together again.

problem is the cpu contact, the cpu is attached to the heat sink. when put back after cleaning, it is better to take off the cpu and insert into the base separately to ensure good contact of the cpu legs, need to reapply the thermal paste. now works fine, much quieter and cooler even the cpu works in full power.

>> Re: Sony vaio FRV26- how to access and clean fan and heatsink???
I have a vaio pcg-frv26 notebook computer and the fan has been making a lot of noise lately and the computer itself overheating. I am a complete novice when it comes to cleaning or really doing anything with a computer so I need detailed instructions on how to disassemble the laptop to access the cooling fan and heatsink and also how to go about doing the actual cleaning. I have read that a vacuum creates a lot of static and to only use compressed air after picking out the big pieces of dust with tweezers and I have a static bracelet but i have read one person's post who said just to hoover out the dust onces the fan is removed. so if anyone has this old notebook model and could advise starting from which screws to remove, ect. I would really appreciate it. Also some instructions i have seen for newer models of vaios say to start with removing the keyboard and panels from the front, is all that really necessary to remove the dust and accumulated grime? Can't I just remove some of the screws from the panel from the back that will get me to the fan?? please help before the thing dies on me from overheating. If i can manage this than i can take a crack at cleaning our desktop hp. Our old pc had so much carpet muck in it that it died.

opening the laptop starts from the front panel. no need to remove screws on the back. google to find the detailed instruction of opening the panel and removing the keyboard.
but once you remove the front cover, it is quite easy to figure out what to do next. but removing that cover needs some care and patience.

the compressed air will do the work, no need of other stuffs to clean. if you are not mechanical oriented person, it is a better idea to send to a local computer service store to get help. it may cost like a few tens bucks.

Thanks for your reply. I was especially hoping to hear from you since you have the same model laptop. I was not able to find the instructions an how to open up a frv26 by goggling. All I could get was the service manual for the frv31 series which is a bunch of unreadable diagrams. If you could would you please post a link as to where you found the insructions for the frv26 or give a rough outline of the steps? I would really appreciate it. thanks.
