Ok, heres the situation. My friend brought me his laptop, told me to fix it. [I don't have much more background information on it.]

So I boot it up, and when it goes to read off the hard drive, it keeps rebooting. So I go hmmm. Figure I'll try to install windows, maybe something is wrong with that. Insert the disc, and when it comes up with windows installation screen, it comes up with the "no hard drive found". So I have two questions:

1.) I'm assuming its only the HDD that has problems. Everything else seemed to boot just fine. How can I figure out if it's anything else?

2.)What kind of HDD could I use to replace it? I'm assuming all 2.5" ones will fit into it. It's originally a Seagate Momentus 5400.2 60GB drive. I'm about 99% sure they have the same one on Newegg ATM, but I wanted to make sure that I don't order one and find out that it doesn't fit.

Edit: It's a Compaq Pressario V2000 if that helps any.

Does the BIOS recognize the drive at all? The cable isnt loose is it? Power connection gone bad?

The BIOS does not recognize the drive. There is no cable, its a slide/drop in drive. That's why I was curious if one of the HDD's on Newegg would work properly.

Do you have an interface module that the drive installs into, and then THAT slips into the computer? The module could be bad instead of the drive.

Also, can you test the drive on another computer using either a tower IDE adapter or USB2IDE adapter such as those found at geeks.com and tigerdirect.com (assuming it's IDE drive. If not you'll need the USB2SATA adapter. Depending what you need the adapters cost ~US$5 to $20)

There are also at least 2 physical sizes of 2.5" drives...~9mm and ~12mm in thickness...so you need to be sure you get the right thickness when you order, as usually the 12mm won't fit in a 9mm drive location.

I think you are correct to assume that the HDD is bad if the bios is not seeing the HDD. The working on nothing but laptops for many years, I'd do the same thing. Just be sure the physical size is correct and you should be good to go.

Ok, but now I just wanted to make sure of another thing. Found out that theres a bracket that attaches to the drive which makes it slide in, so obviously I'll have to remove that. But is it true what the person was saying about 9mm and 12mm drives? I figured all 2.5" drives are gonna be the same....right? [aside from being SATA and Ultra ATA, duh!]

Yes, you must be sure of the correct size. If you replace with the same model then there should be no problem. Yes you'll have to exchange the HDD carrier. This usually djoesn't present a problem.

I've found the "carrier" / "module" or whatever one wants to call it, at fault on several occassions. Some of these carriers have a flat cable that connects to the HDD, and the cable goes to an interface header/plug on the carrier. The header is what actually plugs into the computer motherboard. The cable connections to the interface header/plug are sometimes stressed and fail. So, if you can, I'd suggest testing the HDD by itself if you have this type of carrier.

If the HDD connector plugs directly into the motherboard, obviously you won' t have that problem...but I'd still recommend testing the HDD separately before spending money on replacing the drive...unless you just want to take advantage and uplift the capacity at the same time?

Anyway, good luck.

Well, I've already ordered the drive. I looked at the pins on the drive and the one on the site, and they match up. And as far as I can tell, its gotta be the HDD causing problems. If not, we can always send the drive back [the one i just ordered]. Only thing that makes me nervous is the 9mm and 12mm thing. I checked the site, and it didn't give me dimensions, but I'm pretty confident that it should work.

Sweet, sorry for the wait guys. Bought the hard drive, got it a couple of days ago, and the laptop boots up just fine now. Had to reinstall windows but all is good.
