This is part two of the official Hardware Analysis Suggestion and Idea Thread. Part one can be found here:
http://www.hardwareanalysis.com/content/topic/61345/

The following is a list of feature that are planned in the near future, in no particular order. Some of the items are fairly vague because their exact mechanics have not been finalized yet. Feel free to discuss these items or suggest new ones.

1. Advanced search
- Search through post titles or bodies.
- Search particular forums only.
- Filter results by date
- Search for all posts by a particular user

2. Better management of private messages.

3. Better management of subscribed/favorite topics.

4. More formatting codes
-
-
-
5. Image/file attachments to forum posts

6. More customizations of user profiles

7. Better
with link to original message and post date

8. Keeping track of what topics have been "read"
- See "unread" threads
- Receive single email notification about new posts

9. Post ratings

10. More RSS feeds for favorite topics, subscribed topics, message box.

11. Ability to "Preview" while posting

12. Ability to reply without leaving original page

Sounds good. What exactly do you plan to do with post ratings? Don't make it like Digg.

Those look great. I cant wait for the implementation of them.

Would it be possible to setup some sort of poll to see what the community would want to see next out of this list?

That's one if items that was "vague" as I mentioned. So far I think you'll be able to give +1/-1 to each post which will turn the indicator green/red.

I suppose that is somewhat like Digg, but not exactly. Remember, the goal here is to separate junk from useful information, not to see "most popular" items like on Digg.

Acctually that sounds like a good idea. So basically if the majority of users say that a post is junk then it gets a "red light". That way it would be easier for us to see what posts are worth reading.

We may do that in a few days once discussions in here die down. So far I've been tackling the problems by their size - some of these items are fairly easy and some are fairly complicated, and it is not obvious to someone on the outside which one is which. The more complicated ones I frequently broke apart and left harder parts for later (ie, "|quote|" tag).

While the rating system seems odd and kinda pointless to me, the rest of the ideas are solid gold. HWA could soon take over the world.

I agree with McFly. I'm not too keen on that post rating stuff, but otherwise the stuff is looking pretty spiffy.

It might be good if its implemented the right way but if its anything like Digg's thumbs up/down thing then it will be a disaster. People just digg up there friends and people with the same opinions. Read a article in the Apple section and all pro-Apple comments are dugg way up, and all anti-MS comments are dugg way up.

That's very true.
But I also don't see the point for it being used in a forum like this. Most of the comments here should be read by anyone reading the thread, and often times if you miss out on a comment, you'll miss out on stuff eluding to it in future comments.

Maybe there ought to be a checkbox option to the effect of "I would like this post to be available to Analyze (Digg)"

Hehe, there's a good name.

You can Digg posts at Digg.

But you Analyze them at Hardware Analysis. :)

5. Image/file attachments to forum posts

I think that this should be something along the lines of...

Add image code which then displays as a link. When clicked, it opens (and loads for the first time) the image (in a drop-down box or something) where the link was.

Just my opinion.

i think only mods/members with certain accreditations should be able to 'rate' the posts if we are to implement it, personally though i'd rather not see it happen.

Yeah. If anything, published articles should have ratings, not user started threads. The only reason why a thread rating system should be implemented is kind of like what they do at experts-exchange where everything is question and answer based. Threads often go off topic so what is really being rated?

I agree with Greg M. too, the cleanliness of this site drives it's appeal. The bigger they are, the more intrusive they become. Maybe, when images are attached, they display as a grid of 80x60 previews at the bottom of the post which can be clicked to view in a new window. That way you can tell what they are without clicking and they aren't big and obnoxious.

I have mixed feelings on the whole rating system. I think it would be nice to separate good questions/suggestions/etc from the junk, but I can't think of a good way to implement it.

i think the advanced search will negate the need for a rating system.

Kinda like Vista's thumbnail view when hovering over windows in the toolbar?
