Looked through lots of posts but can't find the answer......

Dell 510m works fine with the battery but the battery charger will not charge the battery.
I have tried another Dell charger (exactly the same model) but still no good!

When I plug the charger in, the light on the charger goes out and it does not charge (protection clicking in)

I have even taken the motherboard out and removed anything else off the motherboard and it still trips the protection on the charger.

Is this common and does anyone know what on the motherboard may be at fault??

Thanks!

I've had the same exact problem. It seems that your DC jack input got disconnected from the motherboard ,preventing power from transfering to the Battery.
I just bought an External Battery charger to solve the problem.

While an external charger may solve the problem so long as you want to work from a battery, The problem you have is the A.C. connector on the mother is shorted. That is why the power supply shuts down. it Will not shut down on an open. There may be something stuck in the jack, or a diode or some other component on the motherboard that has shorted. The best way to check this is with a Volt/Ohm meter and trace for the short.

Yes, there is definately a short on the motherboard - the problem is: where on the board is the problem likely to be???
I have even changed the DC socket, I did this first!

Still none the wiser!

I would think the short would be in the area of the AC connector. You may see a burned component or some stray solder. It may be the connector itself.
