Hey everyone,

Okay. I hope one of you guys can help me out. I have a Sony VAIO VGN-FJ180P running WIndows XP. The issue is the keyboard and the touchpad. It's always stop and go. It'll function then stop functioning then start again then stop again continuously in about 2 second intervals. I tried the most common troubleshooting steps to no avail. The mouse works perfectly when plugged into the USB port. Does this mean the problem is in the motherboard? Or do I just need a new keyboard and touchpad? Is there a way to figure out if it's one or the other? Thanks a lot.

Ian,
This could be a soft issue. If you use you laptop on the web, some site could be checking what you've typed. Do you have spyware protection? When was the last time you ran disk clean or defrag? That would be a place to start. Always start with a software check and then go on the the hardware because sometimes it's hard to tell which is causing the problem.

Ian, make sure you have the most up to date drivers for your laptop.

If you're having no troubles whatsoever when you use a USB mouse, I would probably rule out any sort of spyware.

Bobby,
You may be right. However that doesn't rule out software. If a TSR is running, then that could account for the hickups. Also if the amount of memory is small, the system is using the HDD as memory and could cause the problem. On the hardware side, if the keyboard connections aren't seated well it could cause the problem. The only way you would know this is while using the keyboard or mouse pad. I have found that if the drivers work properly before, they should continue to work properly.

Thanks for the quick responses.

Willie: I don't think it is a spyware or virus issue. I went as far as doing a clean wipe and fresh install of Windows and it still does not function properly.

Bobby: I looked for the most up to date drivers for my touchpad and that did not solve the problem either. I didn't look for drivers for the keyboard though.

So I am still stuck!

How long ago did you notice this starting to happen? Dumb question, but did you ever spill anything on the keyboard? (soda, water, anything)

If it's after a clean wipe, it's definitely a hardware issue. If it's still under warranty with Sony, I'd check with them.

I bought it from a friend for next to nothing because he was fed up with the problem. He told me that he didn't spill anything on it. It's out of warranty now. What I really wanna know is if I can just buy a replacement keyboard and touchpad, hook it up and will it work? Or do you guys think its the motherboard? Is there anyway I can figure this out?

Have you tried reseating the key board cables? If the keyboard has ever been removed, this could be the problem. You should be able to buy a replace keyboard. Will it work? No one can say without replacing it.

I tried reseating both cables to the touchpad and the keyboard (which is just unplugging and plugging back in right?). So I guess it will be a gamble buying replacement parts huh? Either they work or they don't. Ugh. I do appreciate the help guys.
