Well you should start by scanning for Spyware. Last time I read those are usually joke software (I don't know if that's the term), It's a little script that does a certain action like open a drive randomly.

BTW... I only read a glimpse of this from a book on Borders so don't bash me if I'm wrong lol

AVG only checks for viruses, you need stuff like Spybot S&D for spyware and adware.

I'm curious. What brand, model, and date of production (should be on label) ?

Such behavior also can be due to a faulty hardware sensor or actuator (e.g. button, opto-interruptor, etc) Can also be caused by damage to drive electronics due to previous hot-plug or static discharge.

I've seen what seems to be an inordinate number of HP opitcal drives exhibit this or simliar problem (drawer won't stay closed, drawer won't open, etc) I don't have firm stats on this observation so it can be only considered anecdotal.

here is an up date;
I unpluged the lead from the mother board to the cd drive, and it still keeps opening.
So its obviously some thing to do with the cd drive.

lol it must be possessed.
You could pick up a new one for really cheap now.
It could be a dodgy connection in there somewhere acting as if you pressed the open button or something.

If you have another CD drive, swap in another one and see if it still happens. This will help you diagnose whether it's the drive itself that's causing the problem. Borrow one from someone if you don't have a spare.

I have a HP Compaq Notebook nx8220 with Matshita DVD-Ram UJ-832S. It kept opening by itself. I swapped it with a spare and same thing happened. The Drivers were messed up it seems. I went to Control Panel - system - Device Manager and uninstalled the driver. Then rebooted and my life returned to normal once again.
