Hey,

Okay, I've smoked some homegrown Salvia before, but I've got questions.

The Salvia "extracts" that would be in liquid form, wouldn't it?

Any of you ever used Salvia leaves/extracts before?
What are the differences in the 'trips' between the two?

Any other information you can think of to give me would be greatly appreciated.

I've looked at Salvia quite a bit... almost tried some myself. Probably will someday. But I wanted to mention:

It is a drug. Just not illegal (yet).

This is from superpiece.com
Salvia leaves are simply dried, unaltered from the state they were in during growth. The extraction process uses alcohol or acetone in order to refine the dry leaves and substantially multiply the active ingredient, Salvinorin-A. Salvia extract's appearance ranges from brownish-green crushed tea leaves to a black granular tar substance, depending on how refined it is. The effects of the dried leaves are mild while the effects of the extracts are much stronger and more noticeable.
So, it looks to me like extracts would be like crushed leaves, and just a more concentrated form of the plain dried leaves.

I bought some (dried leaves) back in 2001, tried it a couple of times, never got any effects from it at all. Not sure if I was sold junk or if I'm not susceptible to its effects.

I smoked some of my home grown Salvia last night...I've never got hallucinations from the leaves, but wow...that was pretty cool! Just when I thought nothing was happening it started to kick in. I'm gonna order some extract today (right now maybe) but now im stuck on should i get standardized or non standardized...ive read about it a little bit and have seen that theres not much difference in the trips. (nonstand = cheaper)

>> Re: SALVIA!
ive done worse.

EDIT: here you go Sean: Short term

After the peak effects, normal awareness-of-self and the immediate surroundings return but lingering effects may be felt. These short-term lingering effects have a completely different character than the peak experience. About half of users report a pleasing 'afterglow', or pleasant state of mind following the main effects. Researchers (Baggott, et al) from the University of San Francisco conducted a survey of 500 Salvia users which identified that they 'sometimes or often' experience the following common (>20% occurrence) lingering after effects:[37]

* Increased insight - 47%
* Improved mood - 44.8%
* Calmness - 42.2%
* Increased connection with universe or nature - 39.8%
* Weird thoughts - 36.4%
* Things seem unreal - 32.4%
* Floating feeling - 32%
* Increased sweating - 28.2%
* Body felt warm or hot - 25.2%
* Mind racing - 23.2%
* Lightheaded - 22.2%
* Increased self-confidence - 21.6%

[edit] Long term

[edit] Mood

While 'improved mood' is one of the most commonly noted short-term effects following usage, Baggot's Salvia user survey results also found that 25.8% of respondents reported antidepressant-like mood improvements lasting 24 hours or longer.[34] These findings are in-line with known properties of k-Opioid agonists as well as anecdotal reports and findings of clinicians.[38]

Results from a study by William A. Carlezon et al[39] using 'Forced-Swim tests' (where rodents are forced to swim in a narrow cylinder from which they cannot escape) have been used to suggest that Salvia divinorum may have "Depressive-Like Effects". However, extrapolation from the observation of temporary physiological effects in rats to suggest more serious psychological consequences is questionable, particularly given that Salvia’s short-term effects on motor-control have already been observed and well documented in human subjects.

[edit] Habituation

Salvia has not been found to be either physically or psychologically addictive. The results of the Baggot survey, which used the standard psychiatric drug dependence diagnostic framework, indicate that Salvia has little if any potential as a drug of dependence.

Both scientific and anecdotal user evidence indicates that chemical constituents of Salvia may in fact have potential as therapy for drug addictions to stimulants (e.g., amphetamines) and opiates.[40] Research has shown that the plant contains neoclerodane diterpenes that have therapeutic potential for helping people who have drug abuse problems. The neoclerodane diterpenes in Salvia are k-Opioid agonists. k-Opioid agonists, according to Tidgewell et al, (AAPS Journal), "possess utility in the treatment of opioid dependence and have been shown to have anti-depressant activity as well as block stress-induced behavior responses."[41]

[edit] Toxicity

Most users report no hangover or negative after-effects the next day. This is consistent with the apparent low toxicity of Salvia indicated by research conducted at the University of Nebraska.[20]

[edit] Other effects

A report on several Salvia species[9] has looked at the efficacy of some ‘folk’ uses of the genus. Salvia divinorum, as one of the species included in the study, was found to work as a diuretic.

The leaf itself doesn't do anything in my experience other than make me feel a bit lightheaded. I've never experienced anything exciting from it. The extract is a lot more potent. You can expect longer lasting and more powerful effects, including intense, disorientating hallucinations. It can be a good experience if you're in the right frame of mind and dare I even say be somewhat enlightening. Just make sure you have someone sober nearby.

And just because I'm an admin doesn't mean I'm a square. :)

Lol.

Yeah, the first time I smoked the leaves it didn't do anything. 2nd time I just felt relaxed w/ no hallucinations =[ Then the 3rd time (last night) I smoke about 4 or 5 small bowls (i think they had about 4 or 5 hits in each bowl) Went in my room and sat there for awhile. After a while I didn't get much, but then I had my eyes closed and I started seeing a bunch of weird designs and colors much similiar to the ones seen at raves. It was pretty fun. I ordered some Salvia shortly after my before post. Ordered 3 grams of 5x Salvia Extract and 3 grams of 10x Salvia Extract. Hope I get some good effects (really wanna experience an out of body experience!)

I'll bump this thread when I get said extract package! (2-5 business days)

P.S. For any of you who are wondering...Said package came out to $69.00 exactly.

$24 for 5x and $40 for the 10x + 5 for S&H

Man, this is like Chronic prices for this stuff LOL Yes I did do my homework (price shopped)

Surprisingly some UK retailers had cheaper prices than US ones. I wanted to order from the UK, but I haven't done it before and I don't want to be out $69 bucks if the US Customs decides that something isn't right and confiscates my package.

For instance, the coca plant is not dangerous. It is known that farmers chewed on the leaves just to improve their mood in the field. What makes it dangerous is when it is refined into, for example, crack cocaine which has proven to be very fatal.

The issue with plants like salvia is it could be a gateway drug. I'm sure the clock is ticking on its legality.

Yes it is! It's only legal in 48 states now! two or three countries have banned it completely (i know Australia is one)

"reports" say that by 2008 it will be banned from most of US and 2010 it will be banned completely.

So...GET IT WHILE YOU CAN! =]

Ah, you'll love this one. Marijuana + (yes PLUS) Salvia is said to make the Salvia trips last much longer. ;)
