I was wondering if anybody in the US had any recommendations for good companies to get desktop computer insurance from. I live in a college dorm and it's a high-risk theft environment. The last thing I want to have to deal with his some jerk stealing my rig, but unfortunately it is a possibility and I want to be covered if anything happens.

Here's what I want insured against theft:

Display: Sony SDM-HS93 19" TFT/LCD
Keyboard and Mouse: Logitech MX 3000 Cordless Desktop
Sound System: Klipsch ProMedia 5.1
PSU: Antec NeoHE (High Efficiency) 500-Watt
CPU Cooler: Thermalright SI-128, Scythe 120 mm fan

CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo E6600, Socket 775, Conroe at 3 GHz
Motherboard: ABIT AW9D-MAX
Hard Disks: Western Digital 2500KS, 250 GBs, SATA 3Gb/s (Qty: 2)
RAM: G.Skill DDR2-800, 2048 MBs, 2 DIMMs
Video Card: MSI 7900 GTX, PCI-E, 512 MBs (Upgrading to DX10 Q407)
Sound Card: Creative SoundBlaster X-Fi XtremeGamer
Optical Drive 1: LG GDR-8164BK 16X DVD-ROM
Optical Drive 2: LG GSA-H42N-BK 18X Super-Multi DVD±RW/RAM

A few companies used to allow parents to include dormitory student computers on the homeowner's policy. Don't know if that's still possible.

Might also check with student association or campus cops as they may have that kind of info for new students.

Engraving a unique ID on various parts and the case would help in recovery if they're ever recovered by the cops (but I tend to think that's a long-shot)

I would also think that voids the warranty if the parts needed to be sent back for one reason or another. His rig is only a few months old.

get a renters policy thru grange insurance. http://www.grangeinsurance.com....that way you are covering your personal property and can add the computer at a very low cost...usually no more than $150 year for all

Good point, Mark. It's one of those life decisions one must make...weighing the odds of theft vs. the odds of component failure and the impact of each. I'd also point out what I'd hope would be obvious...that engraving on certain areas (like a PCB) could lead to failures, and of course engraving metal parts with a rotary tool could deposit conductive material in undesirable places and cause electrical problems.

I also just remembered that in my experience if the computer is used for any business activity of any kind no matter how little it may be, then most renter/student/homeowner policies will not cover it when you try to make a claim.

David is right, I'm in a college dorm too, but I lock my door everytime I leave, even if I'm just taking a shower, I still lock my room up.

Get a Kensington lock - yes they can be fitted to a desktop too. This will prevent an opportunist thief from picking it up and carrying off easily.
Put your hard disk in a disk caddy, and take it out and hide when not using.

Do they allow pit bulls in the dorms? Seriously, I wonder if any of these companies have desktop programs. Screw insurance companies, I'd rather be able to track mine down and administer angryhippy justice. Sorry I just have this thing about thieves/scum of the earth.
