As above i want to upgrade from my current rig. I play alot of FPS games such as half life 2 and BF2 ect and also WoW :P Since i got a new monitor (22" wide screen :D) my games are lagging a bit and the fps are not above 40 on BF2.

So what i am going to do is upgrade most of my system but leave the GPU as it is cos i need to RMA it, so with a little luck i may get a free upgrade on that part :P

I'm thinking of going for these just need a few ppl to give me the go a head and ill buy em ;)

Gigabyte GA_P35_DS4 111.61

Intel Core 2 Duo E4400 82.24

Crucial Ballistix 2GB DDR2 PC2-5300C3 667MHz Dual Channel Kit 66.96

Or

GeIL 2GB PC6400C4 800MHz Ultra Low Latency DDR2 Dual Channel Kit 58.74

Wasnt sure which ram to go for so a little help would be nice and yes i will be overclocking to near melting point lol i have around 300-400 to spend i tend to use http://www.overclockers.co.uk so that may help you with pricing :D

Is that motherboard any good for OCin?

Will i see a major proformace increase in the games i play?

Below is my current rig:

E6750 C2D (3.2Ghz)
GIGABYTE P35 DQ6
Crucial Ballistix 2GB DDR2 PC2-6400C4
8800GTS 512mb (780/2200)

you dont want a new e4400. poor overclockers compared to older steppings or the old e4300s. if your intention is to overclock, AVOID the e4400 unless you know how old it is. some of them struggle to pass 2.6ghz whatever cooling or voltage you throw at them. whereas the older chips could breeze past 3ghz on air without worry

Get the geil ram out of those 2 sets for starters.

That mobo is pretty good, go for it.

I also wouldnt go for the E4400, go for an E6xxx instead.

Get this:

Ok so i have the ram and motherboard sorted. ;)

I thought the only difference between Allendale core and the Conroe core was the size in the cashe so this would lead me to believe that the Allendale will OC more because more cashe = more heat correct?

Also from what i have seen between E6*** and E4*** there is not much between them in game performance. So this would mean that teh E4*** are the perfect overclockers?

just asking as the E4*** have much higher multipliers thus easier to OC :D

The cores on E6xxx are much better and binned higher than the 800fsb E4xxx allendales.

Plus, you will see the performance benefit of the extra cache, as well as parts that will clock higher

i actually read it on a site first, then a friend had already purchased a new e4400 last month and i found out first hand. the newer e6600s can be the same- new steppings are poorer overclockers.

here was one notice: http://www.legionhardware.com/document.php?id=642

fought with this friends e4400 for a few hours, most i got was 2.67ghz with a zalman 9700 and as many volts as you like. it wasnt completely stable until lowered to around 2.5ghz either. at those speeds it barely beats out an e6420. compared to earlier steppings busting past 3ghz its very very disappointing
