I was hoping someone might be able to shed some light on whats going on with my computer. The other day I was on the internet and it just turned itself off for no reason. Then I tried to turn it back on and nothing happened. So I decided to just let it sit for the rest of the day. Late that night I tried to turn it on and still nothing happened. Now all I get when I push the power button is the light coming on for about 1 second and a faint clicking noise. No fans , lights or anything else is running. The power supply is new to this computer and is warm so I know it's working correctly. Anyone have any ideas on what this might be ?

RE: Gateway Profile 4 monitor problems
In all likelihood the LCD inverter board has gone out and you need to replace it.
For those trying to figure out how to replace the inverter board, I found this site which has the Profile 4 service manual: http://www.eserviceinfo.com/index.php?what=search2&searchs...rofile+4.5).

The file is compressed using the WinRAR program, so you will need it to open the manual. Getting the bezel off is not easy; I wouldn't advise using anything but your hands. You could very easily break the LCD if you use any tools.

I believe the Profile 4 inverter board is slightly different than the 4.5 model, but getting to it is the same. Other posts about the Gateway Profile 4 on this site list places where you can get a replacement board. I got one from eBay, replaced the inverter board on my Profile 4 and it seems to be working again.

I would point fingers at a faulty PSU. Just because it is new, does not mean that it wont die on you.

Get a good quality PSU next time. Cheap ones like that are well cheap and when they go out, they are likely to take other parts with it.

Will the inverter board cause a computer not to turn on ? I replaced it about a year ago because it went out . I also just replaced the CPU because I was told it is probably bad. The weird thing is that I can unplug the fan (heatsink) from the motherboard and the fan will come on but there is not any display on the screen ? You can actually see the little green LED light that is on the bottom left corner of the motherboard (right above where the small battery is) when you push the power button but there just isn't any power.

I'm not an expert on this, but if the light on the corner of the motherboard goes on, the power supply unit is probably working. The motherboard could be bad. Also, are all the connections to and from the motherboard OK?

When the LCD inverter board goes out, the usual symptom is the screen briefly lights up (usually with a Gateway logo) at boot up, then goes blank. The computer sounds as though it's going through a normal boot up after that, but the screen remains black. If you look closely at the screen in a darkened room, you can sometimes see a very faint image. That's a pretty sure sign it's the LCD inverter board.

Hope this helps.

Just because the motherboard light is on does not mean that the PSU is NOT bad. The PSU could still be providing inaccurate voltages throughout the system. If the system in itself is powered off, it has enough energy to power the lights on the motherboard.

I guess I am really wondering why the computer comes on when I unplug the power inverter board from the plug on the motherboard ? How is it getting power to come on if it's not even plugged into the motherboard ? And what could all the clicking be ? I guess I could be wrong and the new power inverter board could be bad.... What would you replace first because they are all rather expensive to just be replacing for trial and error.

What about a bad video card would it cause the computer not to come on ?
